Florida

This is a true story from Angela Fortunas at Big Bend Hospice Foundation in Tallahassee, Fla. I hope you find it as funny as we did.
A nurse called to tell me that one of our patients wanted to make a donation. I called to set up an appointment and learned that it would not be a monetary gift, but an item one of our families might want to have or use. The item: a casket, “only used once” (direct quote). It’s a lovely emerald green and is being stored in the shed in their backyard. Their grandmother was only in it a few hours before she was cremated. I can only guess that the man who is our patient (and who owns the casket) is too big for it, or he doesn’t like emerald green.
Currently, one of our board members who own funeral homes is planning to go with me to take a look. He says he’ll make a cash donation to us and take the casket!

The McLeod Health Foundation established the Dr. F. H. McLeod Legacy Society, named for our distinguished founding benefactor, to recognize and honor individuals, friends and benefactors who have made provisions for the McLeod Foundation in their estate plans, life income plans or by creating endowment funds. Members of the Legacy Society are not only an integral part of McLeod's present, but are the keys to its future. They are visionaries who recognize the importance of sustaining our health care system where best medical practices and compassionate care can continue to be given to our families, friends and neighbors.
On June 11, 2009, the McLeod Foundation was advised of an estate gift in the amount of $626,580. The excitement resonated throughout our office when we learned of this gift. It is the largest estate gift ever received by the McLeod Foundation.
The gift is from the estate of a family that on many occasions utilized the services of McLeod Health. The husband received care at the McLeod Heart Institute, his wife received treatment at the McLeod Cancer Center and their grand child was treated at McLeod Children's Hospital. The family did not have a giving history with our organization. They were "unexpected" donors who, as grateful patients, wanted to give back.
This gift exemplifies the power of planned giving, and the legacy it will leave for the future.
