Requirements:

Essential:

  • Baccalaureate degree from accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in professional fund raising environment, including experience supervising professional level staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts prospects and donors. Quantifiable summary of major gifts productivity.
  • Experience in recruiting, training and managing activities of volunteers in major gift work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to a wide array of audiences.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation as this position requires regular travel on behalf of the Foundation.
  • Willingness to travel as required by the geographic location of prospects and to work evenings and weekends as required.

Selection Criteria:

  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts strongly preferred.
  • Capital campaign experience at a higher education, health, or disease-related institution strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for fund raising for medical research.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and database operation, Raiser’s Edge preferred.
Responsibilities:

Overview:  Under the supervision of and in cooperation with the associate vice president, the director of development secures significant philanthropic support for assigned neurosciences campaign priorities.  The director of development will cultivate and solicit major gifts of $25,000 and more to support education, research and clinical care for assigned priorities with an emphasis on leadership and principal gifts.  Major gift prospects include primarily individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses.  Additionally, the director of development provides supervision to the associate development officer for neurosciences.

Responsibilities: 

Major Gifts:

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, corporations, and businesses; provides stewardship for assigned donors and gifts secured; assist in maintaining prospect tracking information in Raiser’s Edge and other central databases.
  • Coordinate proposals with MMF colleagues and central office staff.
  • Specific expectations are to achieve levels of activity after the first year that will result in:
    1. An assigned prospect pool of 50 to 100 prospects with a majority of prospects rated at gift potential of $50,000+ with focus on building the quality of the prospect pool.
    2. Presentation of a minimum of 20 proposals annually to qualified prospects for $25,000+ with at least 10 proposals of $250,000.
    3. Execution of 12 (minimum) documented face to face visits each month. Additional substantive contacts are expected which represent significant advancement of an ongoing relationship through cultivation, solicitation, closing the gift, and stewardship.  Annual substantive contacts, including face to face visits, should total 150-175.
  • Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines on donor strategies, maintaining timely, accurate reports and information.
  • Working in conjunction with MMF central services staff, develop and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives.
  • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate MMF procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor.
  • Recruit, organize, train and work with volunteers as needed in support of fundraising and closely related activities.

Organizational:

  • Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals. Prepare reports and other required information as requested.
  • Serve on committees and attend departmental and MMF meetings as appropriate.
  • Attend University and external functions sponsored by the neurosciences departments, MMF, Medical School or Academic Health Center.

Supervisory:

  • Provide direct supervision to the associate development officer for the neurosciences, supporting efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts in support of assigned neurosciences campaign priorities.
