Course Purpose and Outline

Congratulations, you've been a fundraiser for five or more years! But do you know everything you should about health care fundraising development? Find out by taking The AHP Advanced Course. In this fast-paced class, you will find out your strengths and weaknesses and how you can improve on what you know. Designed around the six sections identified as the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) examination criteria and content, this course covers key components in:

  • Volunteer Involvement
  • Fundraising Program Management
  • Accountability

The AHP Advanced Course is designed to serve as a review for development professionals who have five or more years of experience in the field and who desire to improve their knowledge and skills in the intermediate to advanced level. It is also designed to serve as one of the tools available to assist development professionals to prepare for the CFRE examination.

 

  1. Prospect Identification and Understanding
    Topics covered:
    1. Developing a prospect list of individuals and organizations with the capacity and interest in giving to their organization.
    2. Through systematized research and cultivation, further qualifying and identifying those most likely to give to their organization's priorities and programs.
    3. Creating and managing a donor data management system to support gift solicitation efforts as well as analysis and reporting of results.
    4. Rating and prioritizing prospects to assist in solicitation planning and implementation.

  2. Gift Cultivation and Solicitation
    Topics covered:
    1. Developing a compelling case for support to communicate the reasons and benefits of supporting their organization.
    2. Designing and conducting studies and assessments to assist in planning for fundraising activities.
    3. Designing and implementing a comprehensive solicitation program for their organization.
    4. Designing and conducting training for volunteers and staff regarding effective solicitation approaches.
    5. Seeking and securing gifts at all levels of giving through a variety of generally accepted techniques and activities.
    6. Preparing donor-centered solicitation materials.
    7. Evaluating fund development activity and prepare reports to assist in decision-making.

  3. Relationship Building
    Topics covered:
    1. Creating a culture of philanthropy by informing constituents about the value of giving.
    2. Initiating and strengthening relationships with all constituents.
    3. Creating and implementing an integrated communications program to inform constituents about their organization, its programs, and funding priorities.
    4. Implementing systems to acknowledge and show appreciation for gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors.

  4. Volunteer Involvement
    Topics covered:
    1. Creating and managing a process to identify, recruit, and ensure the ongoing productivity of volunteer leadership.
    2. Empowering and supporting volunteers through effective management, such as orientation and training.
    3. Effectively engaging volunteers in donor and prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation.
    4. Participating in recruiting experienced and diverse volunteer leaders, which represent their community.
    5. Involving volunteers in the planning, development, and execution of activities to ensure commitment and success.
    6. Managing volunteers and staff to distinguish between governance and management roles and responsibilities.

  5. Fundraising Program Management
    Topics covered:
    1. Making the case for participating in the organization's strategic planning process to ensure that philanthropy is an integral part of the plan.
    2. Designing and implementing short- and long-term fundraising plans and associated budgets in concert with the organization's plan.
    3. Assessing fundraising performance, effectiveness, and efficiency using accepted analyses and standards.
    4. Applying human resource principles to effectively recruit, train, support, and supervise fundraising staff to enhance personal and team performance and achieve organizational goals.

  6. Accountability
    Topics covered:
    1. Creating reports to constituents regarding the sources, uses, and management of donated funds to maintain organizational credibility.
    2. Taking steps to assure compliance with appropriate regulations, including for reporting.
    3. Creating systems to assure that donor instructions and designations are met and documented.
