The time has come for leaders in health care philanthropy to change the case for support for our industry. We must fully appreciate the larger conversation that is already underway in our country questioning the quality and cost of health care, and we must create a compelling message that defines philanthropic investment in health care as part of a larger solution.

The Virginia Mason Foundation in Seattle, Washington changed its case for support at the same time Virginia Mason Medical Center began to focus on improving quality and safety by eliminating waste and errors. The result has been unprecedented levels of philanthropic support from donors at all levels.

Relevance has always been essential to crafting an effective case for support. Today's challenge and opportunity is to create opportunities locally for donors to make a difference in a critical national issue, and at the same time elevate health care philanthropy as an essential ingredient in the way forward.
