Regional Director's Update
David Flood
Regional Director |
With Spring finally taking hold, many of us have recently come out of hibernation with thoughts toward rejuvenation and renewal of those countless acquaintances and activities that seem to get muted by the winter season. Professionally, this time tends to focus us on the practical application of, and ‘first glimpse’ results from those innovative tools and strategies that sounded so good to incorporate back in January when we proudly announced our ambitious goals for the for the upcoming year. Whether Spring has arrived with things going “perfectly to plan,” or “still having lots of potential,” it’s an opportune time to stop, breath, fine-tune and refocus. This is where AHP and our regional network can be a huge help.
That said, the timing and setting of the June 11-13 regional conference at The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina is absolutely perfect. Combined with our neighbors from the Southeast Region (who like to have fun!), this gathering promises to be one of the most impressive regional gatherings we have known. BJ Harrington and the regional conference committee have been drilling down on every imaginable detail, with an emphasis on creating an environment of outstanding educational sessions complimented by social activities that will fuel some of the best professional networking you will find in healthcare fundraising.
Yes, the conference is an important centerpiece on our calendar, and I hope you will make it a special priority this year, but the region’s progress goes beyond those few days. Recently, we have had some great additions to our region’s cabinet and state representative structure, and their impact is already evident. The region’s membership is thriving, educational opportunities continue to multiply, and increased participation in programs and the annual fund are translating into the expansion of the many resources AHP provides to members. Please make use of this ‘season of regeneration and fine-tuning’ to periodically peruse the ever-evolving AHP Mid-Atlantic Web site, or contact a regional cabinet member or state rep to identify tools within your membership and our region that can be helpful to whatever you are currently striving to implement, measure, increase or intensify within your fundraising program. Take advantage!
Again, whether it’s through the educational sessions, one of the many social activities planned, in the spa, on the golf course, or just ‘out and about’, I sincerely hope to see many of you in North Carolina in June (…okay, I doubt it will be in the spa).
Good days ahead!

| AHP Foundation Annual Fund Update |
By Pamela Maroulis, MPA, AHP Mid-Atlantic Foundation Chair
The 2006 Annual Fund has kicked off and the Mid-Atlantic region is prepared to achieve its $25,500 goal! In 2005, over $22,000 was pledged by members who recognized the importance of giving back to AHP. As members of AHP, it is likely that most of us have turned to the organization at one time or another to provide benchmarking information, campaign resources, and networking contacts. Many of these tools are made possible through the Resource Information Center (RIC), which will benefit from the 2006 AHP Annual Fund. Your gift will make it possible for the RIC to serve all of us better through:
• Funding for continued Ask AHP service
• Expansion of library documents pertaining to health care fundraising
• More research into new “Best Practices” in health care fundraising
• Upgrade of listserve software to allow more people to access archival material
• Creation of a robust online searchable database
The AHP Annual Fund also supports member scholarships that make possible attendance at either the AHP Institute for Healthcare Philanthropy in July or the AHP International Conference in the fall. In 2006, 11 scholarships will be awarded with three additional scholarships being provided to AHP members who were victims of Hurricane Katrina damage.
All members will be contacted personally and we hope you will consider a gift to directly help the services that benefit us all. I look forward to thanking each of you individually at the regional conference in June.

A Calendar Commitment...
By Lisa Hillman, FAHP, CFRE, AHP Mid-Atlantic Education Chair
Anyone have one of those “quote-a-day” calendars? This year’s April calendar carries a favorite: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Eleanor Roosevelt spoke from personal experience. In our professional life, overcoming inferiority means hard work, a personal commitment to learning and learning lifelong.
AHP makes it easy. Very easy, in fact. It just takes a calendar commitment.
Why not commit now to pursue your educational certification as a CFRE? There are two dates left this year to apply:
- May 26 to test in the August – September “window,” and
- July 21 to test in the October – November “window.”
This year, the CFRE exam is computer-based for the first time. You can take the test in some 300 locations around the country. Once your application is approved, you will be given an ID# and options on where you can take the exam. To learn more about the CFRE exam, visit the AHP Web site.
Worldwide, there are 4,700 CFRE certificants and 837 in our region. Nearly three-fourths of certificants who take the exam are successful the first time.
Why not you?

Ken Coffey named March of Dimes Maryland Volunteer of the Year
The Charitable Health Agency named Frederick Memorial Hospital Vice President Ken Coffey it's Volunteer of the Year thanks to his work helping infant care in the state.
Coffey was presented the award at the Frederick Walk America kickoff celebration in February.
The March of Dimes state director said Coffey has been a key part of the Walk America drive, and has supported the organization's goal of saving babies from health defects and infant mortality.
Coffey said the decision to help was an easy one.
“If you cup your hands together, that's the size of a premature baby. If someone isn't touched by looking at a nurse or a physician holding a baby that size, then nothing will touch them,” said Coffey.

AHP Resource Information Center ... how you can help!
 |
|
The AHP Resource Information Center (RIC) handles over 3,000 requests annually. It is the most consulted and most comprehensive resource AHP members have to answer all their questions about fundraising -- and it's free! |
We continue to urge AHP Mid-Atlantic members to submit to the RIC your new or updated policies and programs, campaign case statements, policies related to HIPAA implementation and any other development information that could be of use to another AHP member.
The Resource Information Center is currently looking for the following sample documents to expand the AHP RIC On-Line Library:
- Planned Giving Policies
- Current Job Descriptions
- Thank You Notes / Acknowledgement Letters
- Donor Clubs brochures and materials
Do you have a good example of one of these "most wanted" documents? Please e-mail them to ric@ahp.org !
