Greetings from the Regional Director

Robin B. Moll
Regional Director

Happy New Year to all AHP Mid-Atlantic members. I hope that you have June 16-18, 2002 marked on your calendars for our AHP Regional Conference in Philadelphia. I am so sorry we were not able to be together in Chicago this fall, so I am really looking forward to a great turnout in Philadelphia.

As many of you know, the best way to take advantage of your AHP membership is to get involved. We welcome your help at the Philadelphia AHP regional conference or as a host for a regional roundtable in your area. The members of the AHP Mid-Atlantic Cabinet and the associates in the Falls Church office stand ready to support your volunteer participation in either or both of these important initiatives.

Also, I encourage you to consider becoming a member of the AHP listserv. Go to the AHP member page and enter your email address in the "Yahoo!" box and you will have a direct connection to more than 400 AHP members worldwide. In addition to our invaluable Resource Information Center, our colleagues are often our best resource for information and support.

Please feel free to call me or a member of the AHP Regional Cabinet if you have any questions or suggestions about how we might serve you better. The names and addresses of the Cabinet members are available on the AHP Web site and I can be reached at mollr@mlhs.org or 610-526-3041.

AHP Mid-Atlantic Sets Increased
Membership Goal for 2002

As a result of our success last year, Gail Nordheimer, AHP Mid-Atlantic membership chair, announced an increased goal of 3.5% this year above our current membership of 540. All members are encouraged to tell the AHP story to their friends and colleagues and to pass along the names and addresses of interested prospects to Kathie St. Clair, membership manager at AHP, who will send membership information to prospects.

With your help, AHP will continue to grow & flourish.

A very special gift!

The region made an annual fund gift of $15,000 in memory of AHP President and Chief Executive Officer, Bill McGinly's son, Mark, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11th. The gift was one of the largest checks presented to AHP this year. The AHP annual fund helps to strengthen education materials, research projects and other programs and activities that are designed to advance the health care development profession. The Resource Information Center (RIC), the annual giving survey, audioconferencing and scholarship fund are among the programs and services that the annual fund supports. In total, the AHP Mid-Atlantic Region made a $21,250 gift to the AHP Foundation this year, including a $6,250 payment on our pledge of $40,000 to the Endowment Fund.

Roundtable Report

One of the great things about being an AHP member is the connections we all make at conferences and meetings, and the willingness of those contacts to share information. Our AHP Mid-Atlantic region Roundtable Chair Paul Lakeman is working to make the sharing of information more enjoyable by re-establishing the roundtables in a few areas. Kathie St. Clair at the AHP international office has offered invaluable assistance. Tom Paullin, CFRE in the Baltimore area has been helpful as well. We hope also to work with regional AFP chapters to sponsor joint programs. We hope to have Roundtables established in NY/NJ region, Greater Philadelphia, Baltimore/DC, and Pittsburgh by June.

Anyone who would like to assist may contact Paul Lakeman, president, Bayhealth Foundation at Paul_Lakeman@bayhealth.org. In the meantime, look for information about a roundtable in your area!

Give yourself a round of applause!

The AHP Mid-Atlantic Region not only exceeded its donor goal, but also exceeded the dollar goal. One hundred seventy-seven (goal was 175) donors pledged $23,038. Coupled with a $15,000 regional gift, in memory of Mark McGinly, our total pledge to the 2001 Annual Fund was $38,038 (goal was $28,000). Notably, the region received two Annual Fund awards: Largest Regional Gift Per Capita and Greatest Dollars Contributed.

"I deeply appreciate all the support I received from the regional cabinet, AHP staff and most important, our donors," stated Jan MacQueston, AHP Mid-Atlantic Regional Foundation Chair.

A Liberating Experience!
The 2002 AHP Mid-Atlantic Conference...

Betsy Ross (a.k.a. Bridget Murphy - Conference Chair) has the AHP Mid-Atlantic Conference all "Sewn up" and is surrounded by her AHP Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference Committee. Back row, from left: John Nolan - Sponsorships Co-Chair, Kevin McCarthy - Roundtables Chair, Dave Flood - Sponsorships Co-Chair, Jim Quinn - Education Chair. Seated is Bridget Murphy. Mark your calendars and plan to "liberate your mind" with lots of great fundraising information and networking opportunities at the 2002 AHP Mid-Atlantic Conference, scheduled for June 16-18, 2002, at the Sheraton Society Hill in historic Philadelphia.

"My committee is planning for a terrific conference next June. We encourage attendance by fundraising professionals from throughout the region including senior executives, newcomers and those who work in health care related organizations and long-term care facilities. We are planning to incorporate special educational sessions and roundtables to address their particular needs along with presentations on fundamentals, innovations and current trends," says Bridget Murphy, CFRE, conference chair.

A message from Bill McGinly:

Do you know that your hospital or institution may be storing or tossing perfectly good medical equipment or supplies? It's a common problem that institutions face as they phase out equipment as newer models are manufactured. Institutions such as yours spend thousands in inventory costs housing supplies and medicines that will never be used. Items such as bandages, crutches, gurneys, microscopes, beds, needles, stethoscopes, and thermometers. All these items are badly needed for the underserved around the world.

AHP has partnered with CrossLink International, a non-profit 501(c)(3), non-denominational organization providing free humanitarian aid in the form of medicines, medical supplies, surgical equipment and recycled glasses. And we are asking you to join this partnership.

I would like to introduce you to CrossLink and ask you to consider championing their cause in your institution. I realize that you as the development professional are not the decision-maker for supplies and inventory donations. However, you can introduce CrossLink to your institution's CEO or business executive.

By championing CrossLink, you will see it's a win-win situation for all involved. Your institutions reduce inventory costs and contribute to the well-being of those in need around the world. CrossLink expands its network and is able to provide more for those underserved around the globe. This is an excellent opportunity for you to expand your definition of community to include humanitarian aid across the globe.

CrossLink networks with doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms and medical supply companies willing to donate needed items. And CrossLink does all of this at absolutely no cost to your institution. It provides for acquisition, inventory and distribution of all donated items.

A critical component of CrossLink's effectiveness is its partnerships. Currently, partnerships have been made within a 50-mile radius of CrossLink's home office. In order to provide for those in need worldwide, CrossLink needs more partners. With the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and you, CrossLink can expand its reach and gain access to nearly 500 health care development professionals in the AHP Mid-Atlantic region.
