Director's Remarks

Thomas S. Paullin, CFRE
Regional Director

Welcome to the AHP Mid-Atlantic Region's first 2003 newsletter. I greatly appreciate the efforts of Ken Coffey, our regional cabinet's communications representative, in getting this newsletter out to you. Also, I thank our entire cabinet for serving and submitting timely information.

If you are not already registered for our Regional Conference in Alexandria, Virginia on April 27-29, I strongly encourage you to do so. Conference Chair Steve Meyerson, CFRE, and his team have put together a truly remarkable program of educational and networking activities including a keynote address by ABC News Anchor Sam Donaldson.

One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2003 is to get my CFRE. This year. Those of you who know me are aware that there is always something that I want to do in my professional or personal life that seems more timely or more fun. It seems that I am running out of excuses and I recognize the value of the CFRE to myself and my career. So, I am going out on a public limb. And, since I usually respond well to gentle pressure, I am asking anyone who is eligible and interested to join me in the "buddy system" so we cajole each other in assembling the paperwork, as well as taking and passing the test. If you want to go out a limb with me, e-mail me at tom.paullin@medstar.net. I know a similar buddy system worked well for colleagues who recently passed the Fellows exam, so it should work for the CFRE too. Who's with me?

Let's continue to get together and stick together as professionals in these challenging times. In spite of a tough economy, there are still many success stories making the rounds. Get together with your colleagues at conferences, attend or start a local roundtable, meet for coffee or drinks. Keep competitive or private information confidential, but don't hesitate to share professional knowledge. Take full advantage of AHP resources such as the Web site, AHP Listserv, publications, and conferences. Remember, the number one factor in determining what you get out of your AHP membership is you.

Welcome to Alexandria!

A message from Steve Meyerson, CFRE — Conference Chair

AHP Mid-Atlantic 2003 Conference
April 27-29, 2003, Old Town, Alexandria, VA

On behalf of the Conference Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to join your colleagues in what we trust you will find to be a highly educational, collegial and entertaining few days here in the national capital region. Our goal is to produce a meeting that you will rank among the best investments of your time and money - and one that you will benefit from, with friendships and information valuable to you upon your return.

We've recruited over 40 successful professionals from the field, fundraising writers, leading consultants, and others. Our educational chair, Sheree Parris Nudd and track deans have organized a varied offering for you that includes panel discussions, authors and book signings. Our Keynote Speaker will be Sam Donaldson to speak on The Direction of Health Care as seen from a news anchor's perspective.

The Radisson Hotel in Old Town is a smaller hotel which affords conference attendees the opportunity to more easily meet their peers and develop closer ties. We have a number of resources for you to increase your knowledge of other attendees, and build relationships that will last long after the meeting. These will be available to registrants both prior to and during the conference. Like the hotel, Old Town, a relatively short walk away can be enjoyed whether you have just a couple of hours or can come earlier , or stay another day. We're also convenient to many attractions in Washington or historic sites which are easily accessible.

So, plan on making the AHP Mid-Atlantic Conference one of your “must-attend” meetings of the year.

We look forward to getting together with you in Alexandria.

The Mid-Atlantic annual fund drive is gearing up for success!

Our theme for this year's annual fund is "Meet the Match" and all the credit goes to our generous friends at Community Counselling Service Co., Inc. (CCS) who have offered us a wonderful challenge....If our 2003 annual fund drive receives contributions exceeding $25,000, CCS will provide a matching gift of $25,000. If successful, these funds will be used to expand the Annual Giving Survey. This is a fabulous opportunity. Please consider your level of support and be as generous as you can...it really will make a difference!

Thankfully, we will again have the assistance of the great folks at IDC. All AHP Mid-Atlantic members can expect a letter asking for their support prior to our regional conference. If you have not had time to respond, an IDC representative will call you to follow-up on your participation.

Thanks in advance for your generous participation!

A Message from the Membership Chair

Membership chair Dave Flood will be reaching out to all members of the AHP Mid-Atlantic region through a letter requesting assistance in identifying opportunities to build or re-build member relationships.

The letter and accompanying form are in your mail. Your resulting assistance and comments are of tremendous value, and would be greatly appreciated.
