Regional Director's Column John Drake Regional Director |
Happy New Year! I hope this year brings you great success…and the good health to enjoy it. The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy continues to thrive as an organization. In 2004, more people—whether individually or through their institutions—joined AHP than ever before. This fact allows us now to boast a record membership of more than 3,700 folks. In 2005, we hope to surpass the 4,000-member mark. Each New Year reminds me that time does, indeed, fly. In late 2004, work began on a new strategic plan for AHP. Our strategic direction for the next half-decade will be set by this document that will be developed in 2005. However, the previous strategic plan and its six objectives developed for 2002 through 2005 remains a strong one—and it provides a great framework for me to report to you below what is going on in the AHP Rockies & Southwest (R&SW) Region. Strategic Objective One: Provide comprehensive educational programs to our members and healthcare fundraising community. Barbara Larson, CFRE, is leading our region’s efforts to make A Shopping Spree on Worth: An Avenue of Fundraising Success the strongest possible educational option this Summer for AHP members from 16 states. Our 2005 regional conference will be jointly hosted with our AHP Southeast colleagues on June 19 through 21 at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. Larson notes that shops along Palm Beach’s exclusive Worth Avenue are being solicited for in-kind gift items that will become prizes in a “treasure hunt” activity during the meeting. You will NOT want to miss this educational program! Also, thanks goes to Regional Director-Elect Barbara McColm, CFRE, who is coordinating our region’s efforts to raise sponsorship dollars for the Florida conference. If you currently are working with a vendor who might benefit from offering their wares as a sponsor (or an exhibitor—or both!) to AHP members from 16 states, please contact Barbara. Also, in a regional cabinet call held Jan. 5, 2005, guest James Penland, CFRE, from R&SW gave an update on planning efforts for this year’s International Educational Conference in Vancouver, BC (October 19-23, 2005), which he is chairing. James...you make us proud representing R&SW! Looking ahead, Barbara McColm, CFRE, led the cabinet’s discussion to select a 2006 regional conference site. Names submitted were Oklahoma City, Colorado Springs and Fort Worth (Texas). Strategic Objective Two: Be the recognized repository and source of knowledge in healthcare fundraising. R&SW members continue their contributions to the Resource Information Center and participate in the AHP Listserve. Strategic Objective Three: Assure organizational financial stability to ensure member support.
Membership Chair Wendy Nicolai has established a 6 percent growth goal for 2005 (and a “hallelujah!” stretch goal of 8 percent). Overall membership growth in 2004 was a laudable 7 percent against a base goal of 3 percent and a stretch goal of 5 percent. Way to go, Wendy and your team of State Representatives, which includes:
- Ron Cox - Arkansas
- Kathy O’Shea - Colorado
- Linda Baugh - Montana
- Vicki Macaulay – New Mexico
- Franci Hart, CFRE - Oklahoma
- Randy Baker - Texas, and
- Dee Bott – Wyoming
Also, R&SW was thrilled to be awarded the association’s recognition for “Highest Percentage Growth in New Members” in 2004 at the International Educational Conference in New Orleans.
Last but certainly not least, Linda Cadigan, CFRE, will again lead the R&SW region’s participation in the AHP Annual Fund. Look for your AHP Annual Fund Appeal a couple of months in April. Strategic Objective Four: Achieve the highest level of recognized professionalism in the field. One of my stated RD goals for 2005 is to encourage participation in the AHP Advanced Course in Health Care Philanthropy, which will be offered in both Palm Beach and Vancouver. The Advanced Course, which helps eligible members to prepare for the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) exam, will be promoted to members via e-mails. Strategic Objective Five: Affect a positive environment for healthcare philanthropy through advocacy. Regional Government Relations Chair B. Corbett Christie reported on our Jan. 5 cabinet call that not much is happening in the national legislature at present. Unfortunately, the proposed and much-hoped-for CARE Act, which would allow current gifts from IRA plans and allow non-itemizers to deduct charitable gifts, continues to languish. Strategic Objective Six: Provide the opportunity for meaningful networks for the health care community. Spring roundtable events currently are planned for Oklahoma City by Franci Hart, Dallas-Fort Worth and Wyoming by Dee Bott (via conference call with that state’s five members). Also, Kathy O’Shea is planning a roundtable event in the Denver area that will be open to folks in Colorado and Wyoming. Finally may I ask you to make one professional development resolution as you begin 2005? I ask that you to resolve to utilize one new AHP benefit—whether it’s requesting a policy or publication sample from the Resource Information Center for the first time…or sending a question or reply to the AHP Listserve…or participating in an audio conference for the first time. AHP exists to help you raise more money for your healthcare organization. As we begin a New Year, it’s a great time to make the most of your membership benefits. Again, please accept my best wishes for your good health and great success in 2005. Warmly,
John Drake Regional Director AHP Rockies & Southwest

Campaign for Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas Underway The most important children’s healthcare initiative in the history of our Central Texas Region In Austin, the Seton Healthcare Network is embarking on a $200 million project to build a new, state-of-the-art children’s regional medical center to replace the existing Children’s Hospital which is too small to meet the needs of this rapidly growing 46 county Central Texas region. Of the $200 million, $125 million is being invested by Ascension Health, Seton’s parent non-profit organization. The remaining $75 million will be raised through philanthropy by the Children’s Medical Center Foundation of Central Texas. To date $17 million has been raised. In addition, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has approved a matching grant for $25 million. For every $2 raised, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation will donate $1 up to $25 million. Children’s Foundation must raise an additional $33 million to receive the full $25 million challenge grant. Upon its completion in 2007, the 470,000 square-foot facility will be three times larger than the current hospital, will include both new and enhanced children’s programs and services and will be innovative in many ways including:
- Central Texas’ first Bone Marrow Transplant Program, Pediatric Rehabilitation Program and Medical Psychiatry Unit
- 3 acre Healing Garden adjacent to the medical center
- Fully equipped Education and Training Center
- Lobby Amphitheater for performances for patients and visitors
- Theatres for viewing first-run children’s movies
- “Green” building (LEED Certification) focus that will incorporate the latest in construction, conservation and “livability” features
that will result in a healthy and healing environment

Dallas’ Children’s Medical Center wePromise Campaign Passes $100 Million Mark The generosity of several Dallas families and institutions has pushed Children's Medical Center Dallas' wePromise Campaign for Children’s past the $100 million mark toward its goal of $150 million – with even broader goals on the horizon. Helping Children's reach the $100 million-plus milestone were such paramount gifts as $5 million from members of the Harlan R. Crow family, the Trammell S. Crow family and the Stuart M. Crow family, $4.2 million from the (Margot and Ross) Perot Foundation, $3 million from the Meadows Foundation and $1.5 million from the Karl and Esther Hoblitzelle Fund of the Southwestern Medical Foundation. Mr. Durovich, Children's chief executive officer, said the hospital has "garnered more than $35 million in commitments to the wePromise campaign" in the last 12 months, "resounding evidence that this community recognizes and embraces the critical role that Children's plays in the lives of so many children and families." The wePromise Campaign, headed up by community leaders Sandra Estess and Gifford Touchstone, is the most ambitious fundraising effort in Children’s 91-year history. It entered its public phase a year ago and will pay for adding floors, laboratories, a neonatal ICU, patient beds, radiology centers, and other facilities and equipment that will dramatically increase Children's capacity to serve patients. “Children's recognizes the outstanding generosity of local philanthropists,” said David Krause, senior vice president of development at Children’s. “The pediatric needs of our community are being served, thanks to philanthropists who are dedicated to our mission of making life better for children.”
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation to host 2005 Greer Garson Gala The 2005 Greer Garson Gala benefiting Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, which will be hosted by Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), will be held the evening of Saturday, April 16, 2005 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Proceeds from the twelfth annual gala will benefit Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas’ expansion of the Special Care Nursery that serves as a continuum of care for babies who have graduated from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); as well as Parkinson’s disease services, including The Fogelson Neuroscience Center at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Gala chairpersons, Lyle Foster and Katherine Mathes, are pleased to announce television and movie star, Angie Harmon, and her husband, NFL all-pro Jason Sehorn, will serve as this year’s honorary chairmen. “We are thrilled to have Angie and Jason on board for the 2005 Gala. They believe in our cause whole-heartedly, and we are honored to have their support,” said Foster. Dinner for the white-tie event will be seated and catered by Wendy Krispin Catering with dancing entertainment provided by the “Ricky Derek Band” and “Sauce.” The evening will also feature a silent and live auction. Individual tickets are $150 and levels of sponsorship include: Friends ($1,000), Bronze ($2,500), Silver ($5,000), Gold ($10,000) and Platinum ($25,000). Also at the 2005 event, the Greer Garson and E.E. Fogelson Humanitarian Award will be presented to an individual or family to honor their contribution to the fight against Parkinson’s disease and their work to further the mission of both the APDA and the Parkinson’s disease services at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Both strive to find a way to ease the burden and find a cure for the disease. Last year’s recipient of this award was the Joseph Slicker family. Other previous honorees include the late U.S Representative Morris K. Udall of Arizona, and Joan I. Samuelson, founder and president of the Parkinson’s Research and Education Act. The Greer Garson Gala has raised more than $900,000 since 1999 to support research, education and therapy services for Parkinson's disease patients and their families. Ms. Garson’s husband, Col. E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson, died following complications from Parkinson’s disease, which is an incurable, chronic neurological disorder affecting movement, balance, behavior and even speech. Following Col. Fogelson’s death, Ms. Garson charitably gave to create The Fogelson Center for Parkinson’s and Other Neurological Diseases in memory of her late husband.
