Regional Director's Column
John Drake,
CFRE
Regional Director |
The Florida Conference is now behind us, the Vancouver International Educational
Conference is just ahead and the May 7-9, 2006 Colorado Springs regional conference
awaits us just over the calendar’s “horizon.” We may not
gather often for our educational offerings, but we pick some great places when
we do!
As the regional director representing my colleagues in AHP Rockies & Southwest,
I’ve had the privilege during the last few months to participate in a
strategic planning process for the organization. The product of this planning
will be unveiled in Vancouver as a revised AHP Strategic Plan. This document
possesses great vision and clarity for our organization as we plan our endeavors
for the next half decade. I hope you’ll look forward to receiving it
in October or soon thereafter.
My report for you below, however, uses the current AHP Strategic Plan as its
framework. My heartfelt thanks goes to you for being “in the picture” of
this framework with me and our other regional colleagues.
Strategic Objective One: Provide comprehensive educational programs to
our members and health care fundraising community.
Barbara Larson, CFRE, did a phenomenal job of coordinating our regional conference
in West Palm Beach. She was supported by a “strategic-strike unit” of
volunteers who helped her make it one of the best educational and networking
conferences in my remembrance. Again, thanks to all!
Looking ahead, Kimberly Mathew Britton, CFRE, will be chairing our 2006 regional
conference in Colorado Springs. Kimberly stepped up and volunteered to help
with the Florida conference, and reiterated that offer of assistance when she
agreed to chair the 2006 gathering.
Side note: One appreciated colleague mused in an e-mail reply to our recently
sent ballot for regional director that our AHP Rockies & Southwest had
too many Texans in leadership. While I respectfully disagree (because of the
great representation from all states on the cabinet), I understand the cry
of cronyism. Please HELP mute this cry by stepping up, like Barbara from Oklahoma
and Kimberly from Texas, and volunteer YOUR help! When I called and asked this
colleague to become involved in regional leadership, he unfortunately could
not personally help because of other commitments. But said he would consider
a future leadership role! Please know that all assistance from members in every
state is welcomed and encouraged. More about how to do just that is available
at the end of this column….
Strategic Objective Two: Be the recognized repository and source of knowledge
in health care fundraising.
AHP R&SW members continue their contributions to the Resource Information
Center and participate in the AHP Listserve.
Also, Rick Bragga, JD, FAHP, who serves as regional director for AHP Mid-Atlantic,
and I have submitted an idea to the AHP Professional Papers competition. We
hope to produce a white paper on best practices related to charging an administrative
allocation against restricted gifts to help fund development operations. We’ll
learn the fate of our entry in this competition at the Vancouver conference.
Strategic Objective Three: Assure organizational financial stability to ensure
member support.
Regional membership continues to grow. We currently are at 448 regional members—only
11 short of our annual goal. If you know prospective members, please contact
Yvette Banks at the AHP home office (703-538-3144) and she’ll send a
packet.
HELP! We’re short of our AHP Foundation goal for this year by $5,000!
If you’ve not already made a contribution, may I ask you to do so? Your
gift provides financial scholarships for members of our region (to attend the
international conference or Madison) and helps support programs like Ask
the Experts and the Resource Information Center, which are provided free to members
but which are not free to the association to provide. Your gift helps cover
the costs.
Strategic Objective Four: Achieve the highest level of recognized professionalism
in the field.
First things first: congratulations to Penny Cowden,
FAHP, who has earned
her Fellows designation! She will be honored at the upcoming Vancouver conference.
Penny is a wonderful colleague who is very generous with what she has learned.
Again, congratulations!
It was a privilege to participate in the Advanced Course
at the Florida conference. I encourage anyone wanting a great overview (much
more advanced than the AHP Primer that is offered at conferences) to take
this course, which also is a helpful review for the CFRE examination. (I took
the Advanced Course the day before I sat for the exam—and passed—and
I found it very informative.)
Speaking of helpful reviews, I would now like to convene, in the Dallas-Fort
Worth area, a study group to help four to five people who are preparing to
take the Certified Fund Raising Executive exam. We’ll plan to meet five
times to discuss what types of questions you might see on the exam and the “whys” behind
the answers. There’s no charge to participate and there are only two
requirements: you must purchase the AHP “Advance Course” manual
(available on the AHP
Web site) and you must agree to lead your own study group
after you receive your CFRE designation. Interested? Call me at 972-579-4391
(I have two spots already filled for my group, so call soon).
Also, if you’ve already earned your CFRE and would similarly be willing
to lead a small group of AHP colleagues in preparing to take the exam, please
call me at the same number.
Strategic Objective Five: Affect a positive environment for healthcare philanthropy
through advocacy.
Charities nationwide are watching with interest the machinations of the Senate
Finance Committee after it received the report produced by the Panel
on the Nonprofit Sector. You should have received an e-mail recently about this report
from AHP President Bill McGinly, Ph.D., CAE. AHP Government Relations has produced
information about this report and its recommendation on operational reforms,
which you can find at www.ahp.org. You also can visit www.independentsector.org
to learn more.
Strategic Objective Six: Provide the opportunity for meaningful networks
for the health care community.
Kudos to two AHP Rockies & Southwest members who are leading efforts to
help AHP network with other development associations. Barbara
McColm, CFRE,
is helping AHP connect with a group that secures funds for long-term care facilities.
Also, Kimberly Mathew Britton, CFRE, is helping to facilitate work between
AHP and a national group of development officers from public hospitals.
Contact your state representative (or the state representative closest to
you, if your state has multiple reps) to find out about the next educational
roundtable being offered.
On a personal note…
This will be my last column as your regional director. Thanks for the opportunity
to represent you on the AHP international cabinet. I love this organization
and all that it accomplishes on behalf of our profession.
Please join me in welcoming incoming Regional Director-Elect Lisa
Kennedy,
who will do a superb job for us…in addition to leading a $1 Billion
(with a B) campaign for Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Lisa will take
the helm of our region in October at the Vancouver meeting. Lisa was confirmed
by a ballot vote as the RD-Elect in July.
Right now, Lisa is building her volunteer team of members to serve on the
new regional cabinet. I mentioned in the text above that we need leaders from
every state in AHP Rockies & Southwest. Please let me encourage you to
call Lisa now (unless you’re reading this after office hours and it’s
really, really late. If so…then shut the PC off and go to bed! Hey,
all of your work will still be there just waiting for you in the morning.).
Lisa would love to know that are willing and able to help.
All best regards to you,
John Drake, CFRE

2005 Gerry Gunnin Professional Achievement Award Winner: Gay Clark, CFRE
President, Integris Medical Foundations, Oklahoma City, OK |
The most prestigious award of professional recognition by peers in
the regional conference, The Gerry Gunnin Professional Achievement Award, was
announced at the June conference. This year’s winner was a unanimous
choice. Gay Clark has been a great leader in our conference – from serving
on the regional cabinet, roundtable presentations and conference presentations
enlightening all of her experience and expertise in many areas of fundraising.
Nominated by her staff members, Franci Hart and Barbara Larson, her many accomplishments
over the years spoke of her outstanding leadership as head of the foundation
as well as a mentor to her staff. Gay recently retired, but her legacy lives
on. When contacted by Barbara McColm, head of the nominating committee, on
her award, Gay was overwhelmed and pleased by the recognition by her peers.
She was in the midst of retirement parties and wrapping things up. Franci Hart
read this in Florida on her behalf:
When I received the call from Barbara McColm, she asked if I would do one
more thing for AHP Regional. I said of course. She asked if I would accept
the Gerry Gunnin Award. I was stunned speechless. I know the caliber of individuals
who have been recognized as past recipients. They are the premier leaders and
stewards of our profession. They give so generously of themselves as role models
for future generations of fundraisers. They each know and understand that the
work we do is ministerial to all those we serve.
I am so incredibly humbled by this award. I burst into tears because this
is the highest professional award I have ever received.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish Kermit and I could be with you.
But we are probably sitting on top of some mountain in Utah.
Congratulations, Gay.

Senate Majority Leader Frist promises an addressing of the Estate
Tax issue this fall when Congress resumes. No one can guess where this one
will end up. Most likely outcome will be a bipartisan compromise around a higher
exclusion and possible lower Gift and Estate Tax maximum rate.
CARE act is still a hopeful inclusion in the MORE Act of 2005. The CARE proposal,
contained in Title III of S. 6, the Marriage, Opportunity, Relief, and Empowerment
Act of 2005, includes several charitable giving incentives, including a charitable
deduction for nonitemizers and tax-free distributions to charities from individual
retirement accounts. There also are provisions to improve the oversight of
exempt organizations, including more money for IRS oversight operations and
making more IRS determination letters available to the public. There are
few on Capitol Hill don’t pledge their support to additional incentives
to encourage increases in legitimate charitable giving. There are also some
in congress who are working on several charitable reform proposals focused
on perceived abuses in charitable giving. Areas the legislation will address
include donor-advised fund reform, supporting organization reform, and self-dealing.
Hold tight for news from AHP and more details as they develop.

INTEGRIS Young Philanthropists
INTEGRIS Young Philanthropists is a progressive new donor program that cultivates
the next generation of philanthropists. Members are focused on strengthening
their community through a relationship with INTEGRIS Health.
Members of this new group have had the opportunity to participate in private
tours of several INTEGRIS facilities enabling them to see first- hand the diversity
of care INTEGRIS Health provides the community with the help of its donors.
To date, members have toured Western Village Academy, INTEGRIS Mental Health-Spencer
and INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.
Members of the group are already making a difference through organization of
a book drive benefiting Western Village Academy and a clothing drive for children
undergoing treatment at INTEGRIS Mental Health-Spencer.
INTEGRIS Young Philanthropists plan to host three gatherings each year and
hold an annual fundraiser in 2006. Members make donations of $500 annually
to the INTEGRIS program of their choice.
For more information about INTEGRIS Young Philanthropists, contact Franci Hart.
2005 Greer Garson Gala A Hit!
With more than 550 people in attendance, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation
and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in Dallas, Texas hosted the successful
Greer Garson Gala on April 16, 2005. The gala’s honorary chairs were
actress, Angie Harmon and her football star husband, Jason Sehorn.

pregnant) and Jason Sehorn, Gala co-chair, Katherine Mathes and Mark H. Merrill,
President, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. |
Approximately $290,000 was raised from this event, which is a great accomplishment.
Above all, ticket sales, sponsorships and the community’s excitement
for this event all increased from previous years.
“Through the hard work of many, this event was a huge success for the
Parkinson’s program and the Special Care Nursery at PHD,” said
Mark H. Merrill, president of PHD. “Just as important as the monies raised,
the Greer Garson Gala was a huge success in spreading the word about the quality
of care and programs provided at this fine hospital. If we gained one new community
friend from this event, we have achieved our goal.”
The program for the night consisted of many thanks to the events’ chairpersons,
Lyle Foster and Katherine Mathes, and their many advisory and executive committee
members, as well as the gala honorary chairs, Angie Harmon Sehorn and Jason
Sehorn. Mrs. Sehorn spoke sincerely about her positive experience at Presbyterian
Hospital of Dallas (PHD), her and her husband’s complete support of the
hospital and the physicians and health care staff who help make PHD their hospital
of choice. In addition to the spoken gratitude, a video was shown highlighting
the skill, dedication and teamwork of the health care staff and physicians
on the medical staff at PHD.
“The gala was one that all of the guests are sure to remember,” said
Ben Casey, president of Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation. “We are so
proud of the turn-out and the success of the event.”
