AHP Southeast Regional News
August 2007
Greetings from sunny, hot Florida! I was fortunate enough to see many of you at our regional conference in June and hope that by now you have had a chance to return to your hospitals and put into action the best practices and great ideas acquired there. Congratulations to Crissy Barnes Maynard, FAHP and her team for an outstanding educational experience.
One of the strongest messages of the conference for many was the growing importance of certification in our profession. Speakers opened their presentations mentioning it. Pearl Veenema, FAHP, our AHP International Board Chair, included it in her comments. Round tables were added to the luncheon to address it, and members freely shared recent experiences sitting for either the CFRE or the Fellow exam.
I am pleased to announce that as a result of the momentum gathered at the conference, our cabinet has made a commitment to become 100% certified! Special thanks to Bill Kinard, CFRE and Jeff Lea, CFRE for keeping this issue top of mind throughout the conference. Once again, the AHP Southeast leadership will be setting a new standard for other regions to follow. If you are interested in pursuing your certification, please feel free to contact Bill Kinard, our Certification Chair, or any member of the AHP Southeast Regional Cabinet for more information and lots of encouragement.
There is a lot of good material in this newsletter about happenings in our region so please enjoy reading it. Once again, thank you for your involvement in AHP and best of luck in your fundraising endeavors.

P.S. I happen to know that the 2008 Conference Chair Amy Dorrill, CFRE has already begun assembling her team in order to raise the bar for next year, so please let her know if you are interested in helping out (amysdorrill@yahoo.com). Mark your calendars for June 29-July 1st, 2008 when we will be at the Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedre, outside of Jacksonville, Florida. This fabulous resort is just minutes away from historic St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city. Paul Dyer tells us the golf is outstanding as well so be sure to promote this with your CEO’s and trustees. We promise that we’ll give them at least a few minutes to play!

| AHP Foundation – 2007 Annual Fund update |
By Sharon Jones, CFRE, AHP Southeast Foundation Chair
“Top 10 Reasons To Give” Motivates AHP Southeast Region Members!
The AHP Southeast region membership responded in an overwhelming manner to the top 10 reasons they should support the AHP Foundation. After announcing the "Top 10" reasons to give, 203 members, either before or during the regional conference, made their pledge or gift which allowed the region to reach and exceed its goal of 200 donors by 102%. Congratulations and thank you!
We still have a slight challenge with our overall dollar goal as we have reached 99% or $25,735 of our $26,000 goal! That means 1% or $265.00 to be 100%!! Will some good development person or Foundation push us over the top? You can make your pledge online today by visiting the AHP Web site.
For those members who did not hear these top 10 reasons, please review the list and give some thought as to what AHP means to you. I feel certain you will be willing to write a check or make a pledge to support our professional organization to show your gratitude.
TOP 10 REASONS TO SUPPORT THE AHP ANNUAL FUND
10.) It is tax deductible
9.) Because you are a philanthropist!
8.) Best investment you can make
7.) To add another ribbon to your badge and vie with Charlie Heim for
the “most ribbons on your badge award”
6.) So that the Resource Information Center will recognize you
as a member the next time you call for assistance
5.) We don’t want to embarrass AHP International Vice Chair Russell Harris
4.) So that Emily can pick up more awards than any other AHP Regional Director
3.) To provide scholarships for individuals from organizations with small budgets
so they can attend educational conferences
2.) Show support for the organization to which you are
so strongly attached
and to which you owe so much
1.) Because it is the right thing to do!

Kelly Rowell - Organizational Event Planner of the Year award winner
Kelly Rowell of Martin Memorial Foundation has been honored by Event Solutions as the Organizational Event Planner of the Year as part of their 2007 Spotlight Awards. Kelly is the foundation's event coordinator overseeing multiple events including the black tie Mum Ball, which raises $1.3 million annually. You can view Kelly's winning entry profile on the Events Solution Web site .
Heim Feted at Chattanooga
By Russell Harris, AHP Vice Chair, Reginal Affairs
On June 5, Charlie Heim, FAHP was showered with high praise (and a few verbal jabs) and many reminders of fun times by his AHP colleagues. On the final evening of the AHP Southeast Regional Conference, at a reception sponsored by Chuck Hillary of Hillary Lyons Associates, Heim was recognized for his outstanding service to AHP as Past Chair, Primer Chair, and recipient of the Si Seymour Award, the Association’s highest honor.
Colleagues Stu Smith, FAHP and Jim Connell, FAHP presented Heim with conference badges with 20-30 ribbons attached and declared him as the “Grand Poobah Emeritus” of AHP. Additionally, past Chair Lloyd Horton, FAHP surprised Heim by coming from Swannanoa, NC to be present and engage in some gentle “Roasting” of Charlie. Many of Heim’s friends and associates joined in the lively celebration.
AHP Director Monika Schulz presented Heim with a sledge hammer mounted on a large plaque on behalf of AHP President and CEO Bill McGinly in recognition of Charlie's heroic efforts to “drive” a dues increase through while serving as AHP Board Chair. Several references were made about Heim’s ability to moderate AHP business without bothering about complete reliance of parliamentary procedure. Way to go Charlie!
Regional Director Emily Benham, CFRE recognized Heim with a toast at the closing dinner at the Marriott Chattanooga. John Harper also serenaded Heim with an “original” Tennessee ballad written especially for the occasion.
Thanks for the memories Charlie! We all wish you a wonderful retirement and Godspeed!
| AHP Southeast Regional Conference: A big success |
By Crystal Barnes Maynard, FAHP
2007 AHP Southeast Conference Planning Committee Chair

Every year the Southeast Regional Conference just gets better and better!
This year’s conference, held in Chattanooga, Tennessee broke the record again. Accolades go to the truly outstanding committee including:
Emily Benham, CFRE; Bill Kinard, CFRE; Gina De La Cruz Turcotte; Stacy Rosenberg; Jeffrey Lea, CFRE; Billy Brown, FAHP, CFRE; Candace Burnett; Scherrie Cogdill; Amy Dorrill, CFRE; Sharon Jones, CFRE; Kevin McCarthy, CFRE; Holly Duncan, CFRE; George Maynard, III, FAHP; Amanda Youngblood; Ginny Culpepper; Anne Chandler, CFRE; Lauren Adams; Amy Dowden; Susan Ready; Rebecca Taylor; Molly Sassee; Lynn McClain; Buffie Harper; John Harper; Scott Hodoval and Paul Dyer.
Thanks so much for all your hard work!
Bill Kinard and his educational track deans focused on major and planned giving, back to the basics, best practices and special topics and leadership. Each of the presentations in these categories were led by top-notch speakers who shared the latest in best practices and industry trends. In addition, two industry leaders presented our plenary sessions. A special thanks goes to June J. Bradham, CFRE, President of Corporate DevelopMint, and Bruce W. Flessner, Principal of Bentz Whaley Flessner for their presentations!
Networking at our social events is always a highlight of our conferences. This year each of our receptions and dinners were outstanding. Monday night at the Tennessee Aquarium was a special highlight. The world’s largest freshwater aquarium is home to more than 12,000 animals, including fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, bird, butterflies and more. Nearly all 200 attendees gathered to see the aquarium and to enjoy barbeque for dinner afterwards.
We are grateful to our exhibitors and sponsors also. These folks displayed their latest products and services and helped us to explore new ways to rejuvenate our offices.
Thanks to all those who hosted and participated at the roundtables. These discussions allow us to share our successes and challenges with our colleagues.
Training for newcomers and for advanced certification was also offered in the form of the AHP Development Primer and the Advanced Course in Health Care Fundraising.
Next year’s AHP Conference will be chaired by Amy Dorrill, CFRE, and will be held June 29 – July 1 in Jacksonville, Florida. Mark your calendars and plan to be there! Crystal Barnes Maynard, FAHP

Join us in Philly for the 2007 AHP International Conference!
By Candy Burnett, AHP Southeast Regional Director-Elect

As one of the track deans for the 2007 AHP International Conference, I want to extend a personal invitation to all of you in hopes that we’ll have a great Southeast showing in Philadelphia! This year’s conference promises to be outstanding. I can assure you that the Education Committee had YOU in mind when planning the various sessions. Please take a moment to review the conference brochure or visit the AHP Web site. In addition to the excellent educational offerings, you’ll notice that Carolyn Kepcher of Graham-Pelton Consulting is one of our keynote speakers. Does her name sound familiar? Well, if you are a fan of “The Apprentice,” then you’ll remember that Carolyn once worked for “The Donald!” She will be sharing “Business Lessons for the Nonprofit Professional,” which is sure to be a conference highlight.
This year’s conference promises to be the best one yet, so make plans to attend – Emily Benham and I look forward to seeing you in Philly! Candace C. Burnett

Government Relations updates
By Greg Pope, AHP Southeast Government Relations Chair
Tax-Exempt Hospitals Face More Scrutiny
It is clear from the activity that took place in July 2007 that tax-exempt hospitals are facing continued scrutiny at the Federal level. On July 24, the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight conducted a hearing to review the state of the nonprofit community. On that same day, the Finance Committee released its 28-page letter from Acting IRS Commissioner Brown, which responded to a March 2 request from Senator Grassley for information on compliance problems. Five days prior to that, on July 19, Sen. Chuck Grassley released a staff discussion draft on non-profit hospital reforms. AHP President and CEO Bill McGinly’s article in the August 2007 AHP E-Connect newsletter provided an overview of these important July events and offered an in-depth analysis of Sen. Grassly’s proposal and the potential effects on health care philanthropy.
Revised IRS Form 990
On June 15, the IRS released a draft of a major revision to Form 990 with a public comment period scheduled to close September 14. The revised Form 990 should be completed by December 2007. The updated Form 990 is based on three guiding principles: Enhancing transparency to provide the IRS and the public with a realistic picture of the organization; Promoting compliance by accurately reflecting the organizations operations so the IRS may efficiently assess the risk of noncompliance; and to minimize the burden on filing organizations. AHP will be commenting on the revised Form 990 in the coming days.
Comments on the Pension Protection Act of 2006
The U.S. House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee, chaired by John Lewis (D-GA), has requested written comments on provisions in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 relating to tax-exempt organizations. The Subcommittee is particularly interested in how the new provisions on charities and foundations will affect charitable efforts and the difficulties that may arise in implementing these provisions. The American Bar Association Section of Taxation has called for further guidance on the Pension Protection Act, including a clearer definition of a donor-advised funds, the definition of a Type III functionally integrated supported organization, and the factors that indicate whether a person directly or indirectly controls a supported organization.

Certification: AHP Southeast bands together!
By J. William Kinard, Jr., CFRE, AHP Southeast Certification Chair
While certification is appealing for many AHP members, have you had these thoughts run through your mind about The CFRE or Fellow levels of certification?
- That’s for those other guys. I’ve been in it long enough not to need the CFRE.
- It’s just too much to accomplish with my busy life and work schedule.
- There’s no way I can do it alone, is there?
The AHP Southeast Region is providing an opportunity to “band together” for the purpose of preparing for the CFRE and the Fellow levels of certification. We held our first “roundtable” at the Regional Conference in Chattanooga and discovered that all who took part found it useful.
The “test” group felt that it would benefit our region to have quarterly opportunities available to demystify and humanize the certification process. While the materials needed to prepare for the CFRE are available at www.cfre.org, our initial roundtable felt that some level of camaraderie would bolster confidence and thereby empower more in our region to prepare for the CFRE.
So if you have an interest in helping us develop these quarterly roundtables (likely by conference call) or if you would like to participate in them, please feel free to contact me (bkinard@ghs.org). Our hope is to begin these in the fourth quarter of 2007.
As to the AHP Fellow (FAHP) certification, a small group is banding together to prepare for the Fellow exam. If you are interested in participating in this small study group, please contact me as we will begin our journey soon. Opportunities to take the Fellow exam are available during July at The AHP Madison Institute and in October at the Annual International Education Conference. For more information on the Fellow designation, please see the AHP Web site.
Also, you will find a link on the AHP Canada Web site to a very nice piece called the "Philanthropy Pathway," put together by Lyn Russo, CFRE, that outlines the
outlines AHP education opportunities which will assist you in pursuit of your CFRE or FAHP designation.
Thanks Lyn for sharing!

Affiliate's Corner: "Name Dropping"
By Paul G. Dyer, AHP Southeast Affiliate Chair
During a recent conversation with a client, we discussed the many motivational factors that can affect human behavior (see Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs). Donor recognition certainly has the power to make a positive impact on the psychology of a donor.
The client suggested that the hospital foundation add a new giving level to their donor wall called "None of the Above.” While we shared a laugh, the comment wasn’t far from the truth. After all, when thoughtfully planned and tastefully executed, public donor recognition becomes the beacon that shines forth to influence others to participate in facility growth.
Let’s face it, not long ago donor recognition was an afterthought. Now, health care development professionals are much smarter. Investing in quality, planned, coordinated public recognition systems and naming opportunity signage will return benefits that allow the foundation to:
- Project a quality driven image to the community - donors like to associate
with winners.
- Thank your existing donors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Motivate new gifts and encourage existing donors to reach higher giving levels.
- Educate the community about your fundraising programs.
Wow! That’s a lot of bang for your buck!
Are you in the market for a recognition system or naming opportunity signage? Ask yourself, “What will this display represent in current and future dollars raised”? “What image do we want to project to the community”? Then, don’t be afraid to invest in this valuable asset for your institution.
Keep thanking until your donors give again!
