Regional Director's Update

Emily H. Benham, CFRE
AHP Southeast Regional Director

What an honor it is to serve as the regional director for the great Southeast region of AHP. Our region of eight states is known not only for fantastic educational conferences, but also for its wealth of talented fundraising professionals who are genuinely willing to share best practices and other lessons learned along the way.

As the AHP Southeast regional director, I have the responsibility of serving on the AHP International board, and will keep you informed of our activities through this e-mail newsletter.

On a regional level, your cabinet is comprised of 13 dynamic individuals who are committed to both AHP and to furthering the highest ideals of health care philanthropy. Links to the regional cabinet listing are included in this newsletter. I encourage you to contact any one of us with questions and/or suggestions so that we can best represent you and your needs.

Our focus for the region in 2007, driven by AHP’s strategic initiatives, revolves around four main objectives:

  • To offer exceptional quality educational programs
  • To spotlight best practices
  • To establish a dynamic state representative network
  • To encourage a lifetime of learning and achievement through the certification process

Our cabinet met most recently at the end of January at the site of our next regional conference in Chattanooga, and they are already hard at work.

I look forward to our journey together and to learning of both your achievements and challenges as your further the cause of health care philanthropy in partnership with AHP.

Don’t Miss the 2007 AHP Southeast Conference in Chattanooga!

By Crystal Barnes Maynard, FAHP
2007 AHP Southeast Conference Planning Committee Chair

Save the dates! The AHP Southeast conference committee has been hard at work since the end of our previous conference in Asheville, NC, last June. We have assembled an outstanding team of dedicated committee members, all of whom have worked diligently to plan a great conference.

Themed “Rivers and Rapids: Navigating New Opportunities in Health Care Philanthropy” the conference will be held June 3-5, 2007 at the Chattanooga Marriott at the Convention Center.

The education program is truly excellent and features luncheon and plenary speakers Bruce Flessner of Bentz Whaley Flessner Consultants and June Bradham of Corporate Developmint, along with many of our AHP colleagues known for their great teaching skills. Educational tracks focus on four areas: major and planned gifts, back to basics, best practices and special topics, and leadership track.

Understanding the importance of networking and learning from each other, we have also planned some wonderful social opportunities as well – including an optional event at the Chattanooga Aquarium.

Be sure to join us for this exciting event. By now, you should have received your brochure. Don’t miss the early bird deadline May 4th. See you there!

To learn more about the AHP Southeast Regional Conference, visit the AHP Web site.

Register by May 4th and save $75!

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA

Voted one of America’s “Top Family Weekend Getaways” by Southern Living’s Reader’s Choice Awards, Chattanooga is certain to be a wonderful escape for the AHP Southeast Regional Conference as well as the perfect location for our families.

On the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River, there are river parks, river walks, and attractions you won’t find anywhere else in the country – all within strolling distance of your hotel room.

The Chattanooga skyline features six magnificent peaks that top the Tennessee Aquarium’s River and Ocean Journey buildings. River Journey features stunning freshwater creatures while Ocean Journey is a saltwater experience where 10-foot sharks glide through amazing coral formations. Just a few feet away, you will find the IMAX 3D Theater showing a film every hour on the hour.

You and your children can pilot a river boat, climb high atop a crow’s nest, build sailboats and make water wheels spin in the Creative Discovery Museum’s River Play. The museum also offers a rooftop playground, Dino Dig and a Little Yellow House where kids rule.

After a busy day of touring, relax in the many shady spots along the river walk and watch as little ones enjoy a splash in the wading pools or a ride on the Coolidge Park Carousel.

Chattanooga, a wonderful opportunity for the entire family! Come and enjoy!

Southeast Regional Conference Scholarships

By Jeff Leas, CFRE
2007 AHP Southeast Education Chair

As you may know, each year the AHP Southeast region offers six scholarships to attend the upcoming regional conference. This year’s conference, which will be held in Chattanooga on June 3-5, 2007, promises to be one of our best ever with new and expanded educational tracks and too many extra activities to count!

Four of the scholarships are made available through the AHP Southeast region and two scholarships (the Piper Cook Memorial Scholarships) are extended to qualified candidates through the generosity of Terry Upshaw Morgan and the Baptist Hospital Foundation. All scholarships are valued at $500.

This year’s deadline for all six scholarships is March 16, 2007. For more information about the scholarships and to download an application, please visit the AHP Web site. I encourage you to consider completing an application as soon as possible.
