The Top-Heavy Year: What 2025’s Transformational Gifts Reveal About the Pipeline Beneath Them

About this Webinar

In 2025, GOBEL Research documented 258 gifts of $10 million or more to healthcare causes, totaling at least $14.47 billion. It was the largest year on record, and the most concentrated. Remove gifts of $500 million or more and the year comes to $8.76 billion, behind both 2022 and 2023.

This trend points to a field that is upgrading a small set of existing relationships faster than it is building new ones. That is a pipeline problem, and it starts well below $10 million.

This session unpacks the full 2025 analysis, including the shift toward foundations and donor-advised funds, the gift bands where we are seeing growth, and how healthcare philanthropy tracks alongside general philanthropic trends. The GOBEL expert team will then connect those findings to the operating metrics that determine who shows up in next year’s data: how quickly prospects are identified after a care experience, how many clinicians actively refer, how prospect pools convert to portfolios, and how mid-level donors move toward major and principal giving. Drawing on GOBEL’s work with health systems, foundations, and academic medical centers, you will leave with a practical framework for diagnosing pipeline health and building the base that transformational gifts grow from.

Learning Objectives

  1. Interpret transformational gift data using mean, median, and gift band distribution, and gain understanding of donor behavior.
  2. Distinguish between upgrade concentration and new donor acquisition in your own portfolio, using the 2025 data as a reference point.
  3. Apply a set of pipeline health metrics, including time from care to identification, clinician referral activity, and mid-level upgrade rates, to evaluate grateful patient program performance.
