2022 40 Under 40 Winners

Since joining MedStar Health in spring 2020, Bethany has raised $1.85 million in support, with 95% of funded solicitations at the major gift level or higher.

Alongside the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s leadership team, she helped successfully raise $100 million for their Medical/Surgical Pavilion Campaign.

Bethany earned her CFRE designation in September 2020.

She has successfully earned both an MS in Health Care Management and an MBA.

I have spent my nearly 15-year career in healthcare and made the switch from the clinical/operations side to philanthropy around 10 years ago. My first taste of the fundraising world was in college when I worked on-campus calling alumni and parents asking for donations. I began my career as a Spanish translator in an obstetrics/gynecology clinic that led to several positions in clinical operations. I was unexpectedly recruited by the executive director of the hospital foundation while I was working in hospital administration. My varied background proved to be desirable.  

I have always loved the positive impact healthcare can make on people's lives but knew the clinical route wasn't for me. Philanthropy allows me to help patients and families say thank you to their caregivers in a meaningful way whether it is through a philanthropic partnership, meal donation or gratitude message. Philanthropy in the healthcare setting is becoming increasingly necessary as hospitals face growing financial pressures and demands. Knowing that I am part of a team that can make a significant difference in the future of our healthcare organization is highly satisfying.

After twelve years at Holy Cross Health, the last five years in the Holy Cross Health Foundation, joining the MedStar Health Philanthropy Group was a crucial step in my career journey. It is here I fully embraced the gratitude model and closed my largest philanthropic partnership to date.

My greatest passion is to be the best version of myself. Whether that's in my career, being a wife and mother, or during a difficult fitness workout. Knowing that I am giving my best at that time, during those circumstances, is what matters.

My advice is to be boldly invitational as I have been encouraged to be and just make the ask.
