AHP Book Store Self-Study Guides The Board, CEO, and Development Officer: Roles and Relationships Introduction For a fundraising program to be successful, the trustees and the chief executive officer (CEO) must play an active role in formulating and carrying out the development plan. Development officers, therefore, must be able to communicate effectively with the board chair and the CEO and cultivate supportive relationships with all board members. That is why this topic is one of the fundamental educational programs offered by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Foundation and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP). This study guide provides development professionals with the rationale for involving the CEO and the trustees in development activities and suggests a variety of tools for cultivating good working relationships. It discusses the respective roles of the CEO, the board, and the development officer; explains common sources of conflict in board relationships; and offers suggestions for minimizing conflict. Finally, it suggests a number of ways to get trustees and organizational staff involved in development activities. The guide recapitulates material covered in the AHP course "The Board, CEO, and Development Officer: Roles and Relationships" and points you to additional resources to help you gain yet more detailed knowledge of this subject.
