AHP Book Store Self-Study Guides The Resource Development Function: Structure and Organization Introduction Many different models are used to organize the development function in today's health care organizations. Development officers must understand the various models and conduct effective resource development programs in whatever situation they find themselves. That is why this topic is one of the fundamental educational programs offered by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Foundation and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP). This course discusses the various ways the development function may be structured in a health care organization. It examines the development function as a hospital department, discusses the foundation model, and examines resource development models used in large integrated health care delivery systems. It also considers the benefits and challenges of centralizing development activities and provides an opportunity for class members to share experiences regarding development structure in times of change. The guide recapitulates material covered in the AHP course "The Resource Development Function: Structure and Organization" and points you to additional resources to help you gain yet more detailed knowledge of this subject. Learning objectives When you have finished studying this guide, you should be able to:
- describe the basic structural models for health care development;
- recognize the benefits of the foundation model; and
- explain the various structures used in integrated health care delivery systems.
Note: This study guide discusses a variety of structural models for the management of fundraising activities in a variety of settings. However, it should be noted that the resource development function is not organized in a similar fashion within every health care organization, nor does anyone model for resource development perform consistently in different organizations.
