Director's Report
WOW! What an honour it is to serve as your AHP Regional Director of Canada.
I am reminded of this every time I report at the AHP International Board meeting on the activities taking place in Canada – all possible because of the dedication and tireless efforts of so many of our members.
One of our initiatives, the Philanthropic Pathway, developed under the leadership of Lyn Russo, CFRE, Chair of Education and Certification, particularly sparked interest with our American colleagues this year. If you are pursuing your CFRE or Fellow of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP) certification, I know you will find this a useful tool. It is also a great way to work with your supervisor to determine how your organization can best support you to obtain the “required” points.
In addition to education points, points for community involvement are critical to the application process. One way to earn volunteer points towards your CFRE or FAHP is to get involved with AHP Canada as a volunteer. Many opportunities exist, whether at the national or local levels.
Toward the end of this year, AHP Canada will introduce an enhanced governance structure that includes provincial councils. This will be a great opportunity for expanded volunteer involvement at the provincial level in the areas of communications, awards, scholarships, education, roundtables and membership.
Our membership is growing under the leadership of Membership Chair, Rhonda Cunningham, CFRE and we want to make sure that we meet your needs with timely and relevant information and education offerings. Watch for more details in the upcoming months on the AHP Canada Web site and in the next edition of Healthy Attitudes. Or contact your provincial representative directly.
Congratulations to Marg Jones, CFRE and her committee who delivered an excellent conference “Enhancing Philanthropy: From the Lakefront to the Forefront” this May in Huntsville, Ontario. There were a record number of newcomers in attendance – a testament to the continued need for current and high caliber educational offerings. We extend our sincere thanks to the speakers, sponsors and exhibitors who made this conference possible.
Next year, we look forward to heading east to Halifax and joining Bill Bean, Executive Director, QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation and his team, who will be hosting the 2008 conference.
Throughout this newsletter, you will read about recent achievements of many of our colleagues. Congratulations to each and every one of them for their personal accomplishments and their impact on strengthening our profession.
Best wishes to you, your family and friends, for a most enjoyable summer.
Cheers!
Debbie McGarry

Membership Updates:
AHP Membership has its Benefits By Rhonda Cunningham, CFRE, AHP Canada Membership Chair
As a newcomer to the world of fundraising in 1995, I remember feeling as if I had entered a foreign world. Up to this point in my life, I had never known anyone to introduce himself or herself as a professional fundraiser. Luckily, an invitation was extended to join an AHP Roundtable luncheon. Here, I was introduced to colleagues that I still call friends today. The support that this group provided to this fledgling fundraiser will always be remembered and appreciated.
Feeling as strongly as I do about the benefits that membership in AHP provides, I agreed to act as your Regional Chair for membership services.
AHP has so much to offer to its members. How many of you take advantage of all the services afforded members? Here’s a look at just a little of what AHP has to offer to you and your staff.
AHP RIC Library
The AHP RIC Library houses thousands of publications on health care fundraising topics including annual giving, budgets, policies, direct mail, marketing, grants, special events, trends, the small shop, and much more. In addition, the AHP RIC Library has more than 50 packets available on frequently requested topics, collects answers to the most frequently asked questions, and is your source for the AHP Report on Giving.

Award Winner: Michael Farrell, FAHP
J. B. Michael Farrell, FAHP, former Executive Director and CEO of the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, is a credit to our profession. This year he has been recognized for his professionalism, dedication and good citizenship both by AHP Canada and by his alma mater, Mohawk College. Mike was named the 2007 Healthcare Fundraising Professional of the Year – Large Shop at the AHP Canada Regional Conference in May in Huntsville, ON.
This award recognizes career achievements including outstanding leadership, teamwork and innovation; financial results, stewardship and accountability; and commitment to ongoing professional development.

L-R: Chris Beckett; Marg Jones, CFRE, AHP Canada Regional Conference Chair; Mike Farrell, FAHP; Pati Greenwood; Chris McGarvey.
This award follows recognition earlier this year, when Mike was honoured with the 2006 Alumni of Distinction Award from Mohawk College. The awards are given to Mohawk Alumnus who have demonstrated career achievement and a real commitment to others.
Mike is considered one of the industry’s senior statesmen. He started his career in philanthropy as a volunteer in the 1970s. His first paid position in fundraising was with the United Way, which experienced 14% growth under his leadership. Later, at the Greater Niagara General Hospital Foundation in Niagara Falls, Mike doubled revenue during his three year tenure.
Mike joined Hamilton Civic Hospital in 1989 and then in 1998 became the executive director and CEO of the merged Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, which recently completed its $100 million Cornerstone of Care Campaign.
Mike has been an active AHP member, serving as Regional Director of AHP Canada, conference chair and government relations committee lead. He is currently one of three Canadian faculty members of the AHP Madison Institute, serving as Dean for the Capital Campaign track. Mike was one of the first Canadians to become a Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP).
In addition to his work with AHP, Mike is also volunteering his time and talents in support of the Robert Land Community Association. The association is transforming a former inner city school into a much-needed community centre in the heart of one of Ontario's most impoverished neighborhoods.
Hats off to you Mike! You deserve it!

2007 Bursary Winners
Each year five bursaries of $1,200 each are available to help cover the costs of attending AHP professional development sessions.
Christine Little and Margaret Ogilvie each received bursaries to help them attend the 2007 AHP Canada Regional Conference this May in Huntsville, ON.
Christine is the event co-ordinator at Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Margaret is a board member of the St. Francis Memorial Hospital Foundation in Barry’s Bay, Ontario.
“I was able to attend the conference with our staff director,” said Margaret Ogilvie. “It was such an asset for our organization to have both a board and staff perspective for the conference. As well, we were able to cover more terrain. She and I organized our days to be able to attend different sessions and collect information on more topics than if only one of us had participated.”
Ogilvie added, “We also were able to meet more contacts and network with both staff and board members from other organizations. In particular, we had never had the time to meet folks from our own country, but were able to spend some quality time with them at the conference. If we had not received this bursary, we would not have been able to financially afford the costs of sending a Board member, no matter how valuable. We are a very small organization with extremely limited resources."
Jennifer Delorey Lion, Major Gifts Officer at QEII Foundation in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was the successful applicant for the bursary to attend the AHP Madison Institute in July.
Paulanne Jushkevich, CFRE, Director of Development at St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation in Montreal, Quebec, will use her bursary to help cover the costs to attend the AHP International Conference in Philadelphia, this October.

AHP Fellow Updates:
Jory Pritchard-Kerr: Newest AHP Fellow
Jory Pritchard-Kerr joined the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation in 1988, serving as Executive Director since 1997. Until 2003, Jory also acted as spokesperson and public relations co-ordinator for the Collingwood G&M Hospital.
Working in a small shop has allowed Jory to drive all aspects of the CGMHF’s fundraising program including capital campaigns (most recently for $6.2 million,) annual funds, major and planned giving and board and volunteer development.
“I am very lucky to have had the support of my Board of Directors in pursuing my AHP Fellows designation,” shared Pritchard-Kerr. “My Board believes strongly in professionalism and continuing education – both for themselves and the CGMHF staff. Many of our volunteers have attended one or more AHP Conferences and understand the value of the certification program. Bud Christensen, a Past Chairman of CGMHF who was a regular at the AHP Canada Regional Conference for six years in a row, persuaded me to take the plunge and sit for the exam.”
“It is certainly a worthwhile and rewarding experience that I would highly recommend!” added Pritchard-Kerr.
AHP Canada recognized Jory Pritchard-Kerr, FAHP, as its newest Fellow at the AHP Canada Regional Conference in Huntsville, ON in May.
Jory is married with three very active teenage sons. Her volunteer work includes the Annual Run for the Cure (for Breast Cancer), various sporting associations and fundraising consultant to small, local charities.

OHA Fundraising Day
Once again, AHP Canada will be hosting the annual Fundraising Day as part of the Ontario Hospital Association’s HealthAchieve 2007 convention, which runs from November 5-7, 2007 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This year’s convention theme, "Inspiring Ideas and Innovation," extends across all aspects of health care and touches research, integration, technology and partnerships.
The topic for Fundraising Day is “Benchmarking for Success.” The session will feature case studies of organizations that have taken part in the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Performance Benchmarking Service.
The purpose of benchmarking is to enhance an organization’s management practices and to adapt the successful standards and practices of others to fit the organization's specific needs. Development shops of all sizes can benefit from benchmarking, and it is especially useful for small to medium-sized organizations because benchmarking can help them avoid the costs of "reinventing the wheel."
The annual OHA convention attracts about 8,000 health care and business leaders to Toronto, Ontario, for high profile speakers, a diverse lineup of education sessions and an extensive trade show.

Making Connections
This year’s AHP Annual Fund campaign “Making Connections” was launched in January and, at just a little over half way through the year, our Canadian goal of $22,000 is in sight, thanks to the generosity of our colleagues across the country. To date 87 of us have contributed a total of $18,500! That includes proceeds of almost $2,000 realized through the silent auction held at the awards banquet at the conference in Deerhurst. Many thanks to all who contributed auction items. Also included are gifts from three hospital foundations totaling $2,350.
Your gift will support the creation of e-communities – an exciting new approach to collaborative learning. It will also support the many benefits we are familiar with as members of AHP Canada such as the bursaries for conferences and the Madison Institute available to us as professionals and, for conferences, to our volunteers; the Durnan endowment for education and research; the Resource Information Centre (RIC) and “Ask AHP.”
If you have already made your contribution this year, thank-you so much! If not, please make your commitment today! Could your foundation consider a gift as well?
A painless way to give personally is via a monthly pledge on your credit card. Pledges can be accepted for the start and end dates of your choice. Please e-mail lisaunde@serha.ca for a pledge form or mail your cheque to:
