AHP Midwest Regional News March 2003
I recently found myself waiting in the airport for a connecting flight. This can be a wonderful time for reflection and strategic planning — in other words, turn off the phone and laptop, kick back and think. I happened to be on my way to meet with our past AHP Midwest Regional Director Barbara Cunningham. The first steps for the nomination process for regional director were to be started. The nominating committee is chaired by the immediate past regional director and staffed by their appointees, in this case, Ken Menefee and the current regional director. Barbara was sure to ask me how we should advertise the call for nominations. It was a natural time for me to reflect on how I became the regional director, what has gone on these past 18 months and what accomplishments we have made together as a region. Serving AHP as your regional director has been a lesson in humility and self-discovery. I meet with other regional professionals talking about the ways the organization can serve our members. There are discussions of issues affecting hospitals and development shops and reflection of how things have changed either drastically or minimally, depending on the area. I have worked with an excellent regional cabinet and verified what I always assumed: We have a lot of talent in the Midwest. All of these opportunities came to me because I answered one question with one word: Yes. "Yes, I can help you with that." That answer has given me a wealth of experiences I would never have had. AHP staff have supported me as have the cabinet and past leadership of the AHP Midwest Region. I ask that you begin thinking of ways to get more from your membership. Think about saying yes. We are asking for nominations for regional director and regional director-elect. You can indicate your interest or nominate someone you believe would do an excellent job. If you are not ready for that involvement, I would suggest you consider volunteering for one of the conference or cabinet positions. E-mail me with your area of interest. I will put this in a file for the new leadership, who will make their appointments later this year. The regional director appoints the cabinet and the regional director-elect appoints the conference committee. I have had incredible people working with me these past two years. Barbara Cunningham has been a mentor, a supporter and a friend. David Krause is our Education/Certification cabinet member and he is working on putting a series of articles on the Web about the process of getting your CFRE. He is an excellent example of someone who said, "I can help." Patti Dalen-Leisinger is the State Rep from Minnesota. Patti volunteered at her very first AHP function in Detroit. She served on the 2002 Regional Conference Committee and has stayed involved ever since. Steve Falk is our Government Affairs cabinet member. He proudly states that he has the easiest job (doing nothing but waiting for Bill McGinly to tell him he needs to do something). Denise Pope began as a State Rep for Illinois in 2001 and stepped up the Communications cabinet post this year. Matt Schneider is the Membership Chair and is piloting a new idea to reach hospital fundraisers that are not currently a part of AHP. He, David Krause and our 2003 Regional Conference Chair, David Land, are doing a great job of involving the state representatives: Iowa, Marcia Holley; Kansas, Kathleen W. Clausing; Kentucky, Ron G. Wilson; Michigan, Jay Zrimec; Minnesota, Patti Dalen-Leisinger; Missouri, William H. Kiel, CFRE; Nebraska, Stuart R. Shepherd; North Dakota, Patricia A. Lahr; Ohio, Anne Johnson; South Dakota, Brian J. Bonde, CFRE; and Wisconsin, Bradley J. Murray, in their projects. David Land has a committee of people working on the best bargain in education for hospital fundraising professionals — the 2003 Conference "Racing to Success" in Indianapolis May 19-22. Lisa Drier Jones is our Foundation representative. You will be receiving a letter from Lisa in the near future talking about the wonderful things you support with your gift to the annual fund drive. Ed Osofsky is our secretary and brings very helpful experiences to the cabinet. Ed has been in our region for two years, but has been an AHP member for longer than 25 years. He is a former Regional Director for the Southwest Region and is an asset to our group. As you read this, I hope you will give thought to what you might like to do for AHP. The call for nominations is announced on our Web site and in this newsletter. Take advantage of all that AHP International has to offer and say "Yes." Susan Rudolph Barcus, CFRE Regional Director

Submitted by David Krause, Marsfield Clinic So you are thinking about pursuing your CRFE designation? You have the required experience, the time to study and all your records together but where do you get further information about the exam? One place to start is the AHP Web site, www.ahp.org/certification. There you will find the candidate handbook and application, a discussion on the value of certification, and a list of the exam dates and locations. Another excellent source of information is the CFRE website at www.cfre.org. This site contains a comprehensive discussion on all aspects of the certification process. Both sites should be visited as you begin your preparation for the big day. Please extend your congratulations to the following AHP Midwest Region members for achieving their CFRE designation: Steve Henrie, CFRE Director of Development Saint Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital Howell, MI Kristin Hughes, CFRE Senior Major Gifts Officer Children's Memorial Foundation Chicago, IL Sandie Morgan, CFRE Chief Development Officer The Freeman Foundation Joplin, MO
Please support the AHP's annual fund drive "Meet the Match" The annual fund drive for the AHP Foundation is called "Meet the Match" because our friends at Community Counselling Services Co., Inc. (CCS) offer a very generous challenge — if this year's goal is exceeded by $25,000, CCS will match it with another $25,000. If successful, these funds will be used to expand AHP's annual giving survey. Your support of the AHP Foundation helps fund many programs and educational opportunities, such as the scholarship program which provides opportunities for members to receive a scholarship to either the Madison Institute or the International Conference, the AHP Trustee Leadership & Philanthropy Forum, Report on Giving, Pooled Income Fund and Self-Study Guides-Core Curriculum. Please review your current level of support and consider increasing it, or if you are a new member or a member who has not yet contributed to the annual fund, this is your opportunity to be generous. Thank you in advance for your participation. Lisa Drier Jones Vice President Development SSM St. Joseph Health Center Foundation Saint Charles, Missouri
