Regional Director's Message

Mary Anne Chern, FAHP, ACFRE
Regional Director

I am writing this newsletter article while making my way home from the AHP Pacific Regional Conference in Monterey, one of the best attended AHP Pacific Regional Conferences ever. Of course while I'm delighted that so many AHP members could attend, the feedback we're receiving on the high caliber of the educational offerings and the breadth of the material presented is what is really important.

The topic on my mind today is LEADERSHIP. Even before this weekend I was impressed with the caliber and dedication of our AHP Pacific volunteer leadership. Saying I was "blown away" by the tremendous leadership in our Pacific region last weekend is an understatement! First, I'd like to give kudos to Kelly Van Elswyk, our 2007 Regional Conference Chair, and our Education Chair, Ann Thompson-Haas, FAHP. Kelly had never taken on an AHP project like this before, but she was eager and dedicated; even after moving from Monterey and into a new position several months ago, she never dropped the ball but was always on top of every detail.

Ann Thompson-Haas, FAHP, made sure that our educational offerings covered the core curriculum, and it was through her efforts that we were able to actively involve many of our AHP Madison deans and promote other AHP initiatives such as the AHP Benchmarking service and the AHP Trustee Forum. A number of attendees have made the comment that this regional conference had "something for everyone" and that is thanks to Ann's dedication to our educational curriculum.

Track deans Susan Blake, Sarah Grace Clapp, and Julie Jones Manning, CFRE did a wonderful job with Best Practices, and Stu Smith, FAHP did a wonderful job serving as track dean for our first-ever CEO and CFO track. I wish to also thank Newcomer Co-Chairs Ron Latham, CFRE and Pat Modrzejewski, Hospitality Chair Michele Young, Primer Chair Dick Green, FAHP, Roundtable Chair Richard Kellogg, and Advanced Class Chairs Laura Rehrmann, FAHP, and Janet DeWolfe, CFRE, for their leadership.

At our lunch this weekend I asked everyone who volunteered either on a regional level or an international level to stand up. It should surprise no one that one-third of the room stood up. The amazing thing about our profession is that while our hospitals may be competitors, we are not ourselves competitive within this profession. Instead our leaders choose to teach and share at offerings like this regional conference.

Gary Steinhauer and Bill Littlejohn were able to exceed our goal of $15,000 in sponsorships from 26 generous philanthropy leaders, and the excess monies will help fund AHP programs such as the RIC (Resource Information Center) -- one of the AHP benefits our members use the most!

Susan Blake is the Chair of the 2008 Regional Conference in Portland, Oregon, which our Pacific membership voted as the #1 location choice for the 2008 conference. She is looking for volunteers! If you would like to help please call Susan directly.

Thank you, again, to everyone who made the 2007 Pacific Region Conference a great success.

2007 AHP Pacific Regional Conference Highlights

By Mark McCampbell, AHP Pacific RIC/Communications Chair

AHP Pacific region members who did not attend the AHP Regional Conference in Monterey, California on June 24 through 26 will want to be sure to plan early to attend the upcoming 2008 conference in Portland, Oregon. The Regional Conferences, at least for the Pacific region, have become the source for education and updates on legislation and membership benefits from our AHP leaders, in addition to being the networking opportunity of the year.

Highlights from this year's conference include:

The Hospital 2020 Strategic Visioning Project
James A. Rice, Ph.D., FACHE

The Hospital 2020 Strategy Group is a collaboration of The Governance Institute, LarsonAllen, Clark Healthcare Group, and The Cambridge International Health Leadership Program, England, Perkins + Will. The group has identified eight dimensions in which the "Hospital of 2020" may be described:

1. Patient Experience
2. Physician Experience
3. Facility & Décor
4. IT Enhancements
5. Employee Experience
6. Community Alliances
7. Payer Relations
8. Governance & Leadership

In Dr. James A. Rice’s plenary session presentation at the AHP Pacific Regional Conference, health care fundraising professionals were challenged to consider seven competencies of high performance fundraising:

1. Current and prospective donor research
2. Securing the gift
3. Fundraising techniques
4. Relationship building
5. Volunteer involvement
6. Management
7. Accountability

This valuable session, both informational and motivational, left everyone who attended giving thoughtful consideration to his/her own professional development and competency. The key question: “What is the single most important strategy to develop these competencies?”

For more information on The Hospital 2020 Strategic Visioning Project you may contact Dr. James Rice at jrice@governanceinstitute.com or jim.rice@clarkconsulting.com.

Learning on Demand Roundtables

An important opportunity for networking while gaining fresh insight through interaction with other fundraising professionals, the roundtable sessions are one of the best ways to spend time at the AHP Pacific Regional Conference. One of the roundtables was led by William C. McGinly, Ph.D., CAE, the AHP President and Chief Executive Officer. Bill walked participants through the AHP Web site to discover a vast array of resources and communication tools available to AHP members.

One of the little-known facts about AHP is that the cast of thousands of members is supported by a backstage crew of talented individuals who are few in number but long on capability. Test the Web site for yourself to see some of the many benefits, such as:

Ask AHP
AHP Job Center
Resource Information Center (RIC)
Regional News
Member Directory
Legislative Updates

The roundtable session with Bill included some exciting developments in the roll-out of online communications capabilities that will be coming soon. Through his personal involvement in the roundtable, Bill McGinly brought credibility and commitment to the AHP tag line, “Connecting People – Enriching Lives” for many conference attendees.

Regional Conference Success!!

As you might imagine, many people were involved in making the 2007 conference an all-time high. Planning for the 2008 conference in Portland, Oregon has already started, but it’s not too late to get involved. Please contact Susan Blake at susan.blake@seattlechildrens.org to volunteer.
