AHP Pacific Regional News February 2002
Set your sails, prepare for a sea change, and come to Seattle for the AHP Regional Conference May 4 -7, 2002. "Health Care Philanthropy: Lifeboats in a Changing Sea" will have us charting new strategies, summoning the crew, and using new tools to re-focus on vision and values for success in our New World of fundraising. Jon Olson, conference education dean, has lined up the best fundraisers and presenters in the West, to help you re-invigorate your fundraising, and set your sights on the future.
For those new to the field, the Development Primer is on Saturday, led by Jim Bowers and David Gillig, widely respected leaders in health care fundraising. You will get an overview of all aspects of fundraising and marketing. The conference opens with a powerful and inspiring keynote address by Robert K. Ross, MD, PhD, President of The California Endowment. The latest in computer/human interconnections is a theme repeated through the conference, underscored by the ethics and values we bring and find in our donors. You can expect to find many practical techniques to take away: annual giving, physician giving, recruiting and retaining staff and board members, and foundation grant writing. There will be roundtable discussions with senior leaders in the field and plenty of opportunities to learn from your colleagues. This is the premier educational experience for all health care fundraising executives from senior professionals to those new to the field. Don't miss the opportunity for a 48 hour immersion which will re-invigorate your work and help you reach your goals. The conference hotel is downtown Seattle, within blocks of great shopping, dining, entertainment, and all our vibrant city has to offer. There's hiking, biking, walking, golfing, and all types of water sports nearby. From our opening reception featuring Northwest wine tasting and Seattle themed raffle baskets, to our closing night "Black and White Gala...From Tux to Tees", we have planned fun events for all. Please plan on joining us for the closing evening gala to specially honor out-going AHP National Chair, Milt Smith, and incoming AHP National Chair, Stu Smith. Both are from our own Pacific Region and more than deserve our thanks and congratulations for taking on leadership of our national organization and for years of service to the Pacific Region
During the regional conference in Seattle in May, some members of AHP's Pacific Region will be participating in a new program designed to enhance the benefits of membership in the association. Entitled Senior Forum, this program is designed to accomplish three primary goals:
- To add to the body of knowledge now available within AHP resources;
- To
strengthen the AHP Journal by enhancing articles and monographs submitted
- To involve or reinvolve top-level, senior healthcare development officers.
Prior to the conference, a group of senior development professionals from throughout the region will be recruited to participate in the Forum. The Forum will research, analyze, and write an article for submission to the Journal on a timely topic of general interest which will have been pre-selected from a list of such topics identified by the Journal's Advisory Committee. At the conference, Forum members will meet in work sessions occurring concurrently with the other educational offerings. It will be our goal to prepare a paper for submission to the Journal within a few weeks following the conference. Each region within AHP is being challenged with a similar exercise, so the resulting work should represent the thinking of many of our association's most experienced members. Albert J. Alvarez, FAHP, Executive Director of Swedish Medical Center Foundation in Seattle, has been asked to spearhead this new project. If you have any questions or comments concerning the Senior Forum, please contact Al at 206-386-2738 or e-mail at albert.alvarez@swedish.org.

| Roundtable News From Around the Region |
Northern California Thanks to the good work of Joan Rosselle, the Northern California Roundtable met in late November for the first time in many years and featured a good crowd, a great speaker, and a visit from Santa. Bruce Flessner was the speaker that day and he lived up to his reputation of being one of the best speakers in the profession with his presentation on the new generation of philanthropy. If you don't know who the new generation of philanthropy is, and how to get to them, you should have been there! Our 30+ members in attendance came away with a new sense of purpose and direction and we are indeed grateful to Mr. Flessner for joining us that day. What a pro!! The Northern California Roundtable will be meeting this Spring and in the Fall and Joan welcomes any and all suggestions for top-flight speakers. We look forward to seeing you there. Congratulations to AHP Hawaii Caucus AHP members in Hawaii have established the AHP Pacific Region — Hawaii Caucus, a new roundtable group. The Hawaii Caucus meets quarterly and has guest speakers and shares best practices. The group began meeting last summer and found they had many common issues, problems and areas where they might help one another. Special thanks to Eugene Tiwanak, Assistant Regional Director for Hawaii, for leading the effort. Arizona Roundtable AHP members in Arizona will conduct a roundtable this spring and will discuss HIPAA regulations.
