Regional Director's Message

Mary Anne Chern, FAHP, ACFRE
Regional Director

We're getting close to the 2007 AHP Pacific Regional Conference, June 24-26 in Monterey. Wouldn't it be great to meet all 800 of our AHP Pacific Region members there! It's a gorgeous location and a challenging educational program. Remember to make your travel plans early. More information can be found in your conference brochure.

This year's conference is an excellent opportunity to invite your CEOs and CFOs to attend the conference with you. A special track developed by Conference Track Dean, Stu Smith, FAHP, CFRE and others offers insight and understanding for these important members of the health care philanthropy team. Consider using this time for you and your leadership team to work together creating a vision for the future of your organization.

As our AHP national membership–now reaching almost 4,500–continues to grow, some of us who were members 20 years ago remember that in 1986 we had fewer than 1,800 members. This tremendous growth in our field makes AHP's emphasis on professionalism through education and networking both important and encouraging. Think about colleagues and coworkers with whom you might recommend the many benefits of AHP membership.

Our 2008 regional conference team has already started work. Susan Blake, a 2007 Track Dean and the director of development at Children's Hospital Foundation in Seattle, WA, has agreed to chair the 2008 AHP Pacfic Regional Conference. It will be held in Portland, Oregon the same weekend as this year's conference, June 22-24, 2008. We have never had a regional conference in Portland, but this location was the number one choice of our AHP Pacific members who participated in the AHP survey. John Korb, CFRE and others who live there tell me that AHP has picked the best weekend of the year and that all the flowers will be blooming! Mark your calendar!

The conference team needs volunteers to work on the 2008 committee, so if you are interested please contact Susan Blake directly at susan.blake@seattlechildrens.org.

Thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers in the AHP Pacific Region. You're invited to get more involved. Please feel free to call me or any member of the AHP Pacific Regional Cabinet.

See you in Monterey in June!

2008 AHP Pacific Regional Cabinet Announcements

2008 AHP Pacific Regional Conference Chair

We’re pleased to announce that Susan Blake, director of development at Children's Hospital Foundation in Seattle, Washington, will be joining the AHP Pacific Regional Cabinet as the 2008 AHP Pacific Regional Conference Chair. We applaud and congratulate Susan for taking on this important role! Thank you for accepting the assignment of the 2008 regional conference in Portland. We're excited about the location and working with Susan, and encourage others who are interested in helping to plan and implement the regional conference to join Susan in this effort. You can contact Susan at (206) 368-4835, or susan.blake@seattlechildrens.org.

2008 Regional Director-Elect

Bill Littlejohn was recently elected to the position of Regional Director-Elect for the AHP Pacific Cabinet, effective fall 2008. This is the first time that the AHP Pacific Region has appointed an RD-Elect more than one year in advance. The regional leadership recognizes this is good policy—and of course it gives Bill extra time to prepare for the reginal director role. Janet DeWolfe, as chair of the AHP Pacific Region Nominating Committee will lead in the announcement and celebration in Monterey.

New AHP Pacific California State Representative

With Bill Littlejohn's new Cabinet title, the region had an opening for a California State Representative, and we’re pleased to announce that Dave Burghart, CFRE from Glendale Adventist Medical Center has agreed to fulfill that role. Dave has been actively leading and volunteering in philanthropic efforts for many years and we’re confident he will make a great addition to the AHP Pacific Region Cabinet! AHP Pacific members in California are invited to contact Dave with questions or suggestions.

Leader of Oregon’s Hospital Association to Collaborate With AHP at Roundtable

By John Korb, AHP Pacific Oregon State Representative

AHP and the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS) will co-host a unique roundtable discussion that promises to give AHP members and guests a stronger and deeper economic case for health care philanthropy. Presenters include Andy Davidson, president of OAHHS; William C. McGinly, Ph.D., CAE, president and chief executive officer of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy; and Mary Anne Chern, FAHP, ACFRE, AHP Pacific regional director.

This event, scheduled for May 31, from 1 – 5 PM will examine the unique challenges and opportunities in Oregon that can strengthen our case for health care philanthropy. The meeting will be held in the OAHHA offices located in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

“I welcome the opportunity to discuss important issues candidly with hospital fundraisers,” stated Andy Davidson. “It is exciting to host this event because of the vital role each of you hold with our member organizations.”

Andy Davidson will highlight the “state of health care” in Oregon and provide information that will assist in developing the general economic case for health care philanthropy. Mary Anne Chern will focus on health care’s philanthropic case while William McGinley will share information on AHP’s new benchmarking program and other programs and services.

This is the first time AHP members in Oregon and the leadership of the health care association have come together to focus on Oregon’s health care issues and how philanthropy can help address these challenges. We are pleased to have such a distinguished panel of presenters to participate in our roundtable.

Assisting with the planning for this event is Don Russo, executive director of the Silverton Hospital Foundation. Special thanks to Tom Wilson, vice president of Campbell & Company for providing sponsorship support.

To attend please RSVP to drusso@silvhosp.org; the cost is $15 at the door. A social hour with refreshments will follow the roundtable discussion.

Government Relations Updates - PPA 2006 IRA Rollovers

By Marite Butners, J.D., LL.M-Tax, AHP Pacific Government Relations Chair

Pension Protection Act of 2006: IRA Gift Benefits and Supporting Organizations

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), provides for IRA owners age 70 ½ and older to make gifts, of up to $100,000 a year, directly from their IRAs to qualified charities. The gifts qualify for the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution and the benefit is available for tax years 2006 and 2007. The distribution directly to the charity will not be included in the donor’s taxable income for the year, nor will the donor receive a charitable income tax deduction.

The distributions must be outright to the charity and the donor may not receive a benefit in return, so these gifts could not be made in exchange for a charitable gift annuity or other life income arrangement.

Although the benefits to donors and charities were substantial, many health care and other foundations, incorporated as supporting organizations, were not qualified to receive these gifts owing to their status as 509(a)(3) organizations. The Act specifically excluded this category of supporting organization from this benefit.

Many charities responded by requesting a change in their exempt status from that of a 509(a)(3) organization to that of a 509(a)(1), thus enabling them to receive these gifts. To assist these charities, the IRS responded with an expedited process.

The AHP E-Connect-December 7 2006 issue provided an excellent summary of the above.

Should your foundation desire to change its exempt form, requirements for the process are found in Rev Proc 2006-4 and IRS Announcement 2006-93.

The organization requesting a status change will need to complete information on IRS Form 8734. It will also need to file Form 2848 Power of Attorney and Authorized Representative.

Instructions for these forms can be found on the IRS Web site at: IRS Form 8734 Instructions and IRS Form 2848 Instructions.

Please note that the financial information should be for the past 5 years and should be expressed in the Cash method.

Recharging the Balanced Life

By Mark McCampbell, AHP Pacific RIC/Communications Chair

With the arrival of summer many of us are thinking about a vacation. What we wouldn’t do to get some “down time” and relax after the big “push” to get our fundraising year off to a good start! We start surfing the net for travel deals, discussing what we want to do with our spouse or family, or perhaps contact a friend and begin making plans for a getaway. Before you know it, summer has come and gone, we’ve squeezed in a week of frenzied travel, dropped a bundle of cash and we’re back in the office wondering if that vacation was such a good idea after all.

The balanced life requires recharging. It’s important for us to “vacation” well in order to return rested, regenerated and ready to resume our responsibilities. Like rebooting your computer when it starts to run slow, sometimes we just need to shut down what we’ve been doing, wait awhile and then start again so we can run optimally. By planning and being intentional about recharging you can have a Healthful, Active, Different experience, and return to work recharged, feeling like you’ve really HAD a vacation.

Healthful
Even those of us who are self-disciplined with daily exercise and proper nutrition tend to stray during a vacation. While it’s important to take a break from routines, we will benefit from practicing healthful habits even while we’re having fun in the sun. Your vacation may be the time to lighten up your diet with fresh local seafood and salads. You might even select a spa or cruise with a focus on healthy cuisine. Take the opportunity to get more sleep. Avoid over-indulging “umbrella drinks” which are loaded with alcohol and sugar and can leave you feeling sluggish and more tired.

Active
Exhausted from the pace of work and daily activity, many vacationers opt to lay around the pool or beach on their time away. Active recovery is actually more regenerative than complete rest. Make sure your activity is fun and stimulates the senses. Run along the beach or down a country road. Rent a mountain bike and enjoy an alpine meadow or rent a road bike and tour the streets of Paris. Swim in a lagoon under a waterfall or with the dolphins in Kona. Active recovery rebuilds your body and recharges your soul.

Different
If you’re a city dweller, a trip to the countryside may be the change of pace you need. After fighting freeway traffic all winter a long drive through Montana can clear your head. For those who work in more rural areas or cover large territories, taking a week in New York City with theatre, museums and shopping might be a good prescription.

Thoughtful, intentional planning and Healthful, Active, Different experiences will recharge your life, bringing you back into balance and making you more productive. Hopefully, when you return to work, you’ll feel like you’ve HAD a vacation!
