teach your Board How to Fish

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.” So says an oft-repeated Chinese proverb, which is the inspiration for this workshop. Have you ever been frustrated that you don’t seem to have enough board members who understand the importance of volunteer leadership in fundraising? Or concerned that your board has so few who are actually good at asking for gifts? Learn how to put together a “fishing kit” for your board members, and the best ways to train them in the art of philanthropic solicitation.

Donors as Patients—Developing Relationships and Value on our turf

Visiting donors and prospective donors who are patients in a hospital or similar care facility can be one of the most effective and rewarding opportunities for development officers. The patient/donor visitation program at Saint Thomas has proven to be one of the more successful cultivation strategies—allowing development officers to strengthen donor relationships, advance cultivation and provide meaningful stewardship. This session will focus on the techniques and thoughtful actions required to establish a program of support for patients and their families when they are in the hospital. Course attendees will understand the role and benefit of visiting patients and families in the hospital setting and will receive practical suggestions on how to comfortably interact with them in a way that respects their dignity and privacy in the hospital setting.

the CEo Role in Building Philanthropy

Health care institution CEOs continue to play a critical role for health care philanthropy. According to AHP’s most recent survey, nearly 60% of CEOs have philanthropic goals and objectives. However, many admit to not knowing clearly how to get a handle on the elements and implementation of an effective program. In this session, critical roles, responsibilities and the CEOs’ function for effective, ever-increasing philanthropy are presented, along with five key elements CEOs can use to advance their hospital’s philanthropy program. Those elements include the importance of establishing standards (benchmarks) for health care.

Infectious Enthusiasm: Using the tipping Point Concept to Create Contagious Campaigns

Creating effective fundraising teams is all about knowing how to enlist the right people in the right situation at the right time. Malcolm Gladwell’s best-selling business book, along with our experience with the concept in a successful campaign, points to an answer.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point, asserts that ideas, behaviors, and messages sometimes behave just like outbreaks of infectious disease. From the perspective of a fundraising professional the theory parallels the classic donor-to-donor volunteer-based “give and get” campaign strategy.

We’ve applied Gladwell’s concept at Florida Hospital in Orlando. The presentation will address both the theory and our actual experience in putting the concept to work.
