Many Charities Report 'Encouraging' Donations Associated Press. 2/27/02
Concerns that the outpouring of donations to September 11 relief and recovery efforts would drain charitable giving to other charities have not materialized, the Associated Press reports, as many nonprofit organizations are reporting donations for 2001 that are equal to or higher than fundraising totals for the year earlier. Americans who gave to September 11 relief efforts donated an average of $134, according to a survey released in January by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center, believes the economic recession is the biggest challenge facing charities now. "My own view is the economy probably had a bigger effect than September 11 on giving in general," Tempel said. "If the economy comes down, giving will slow."
