Mini Course: Engaging Your Board on Diversity and Equity

About the Course

This live, virtual course is designed to help executives work with their boards to create and sustain a diverse and equitable board culture. The course covers a wide range of topics such as creating a culture of inclusion and belonging, recruiting diverse board members, applying a racial equity lens to board service, and engaging your board in equity-centered fundraising. Through this course, executives will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to effectively engage their board of directors on DEIB and health equity issues.

All sessions will be led on Zoom by Christal M. Cherry, President and Executive Consultant at The Board Pro.

Full participation in the Engaging Your Board on Diversity and Equity mini course is applicable for 5.0  points in Category 1.B - Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Recruiting Diverse Members to Your Nonprofit Board

As stewards of the public good, boards must act to alter and eliminate beliefs, practices, and policies that perpetuate structural and institutional exclusion.

In this session, executives and boards will learn how to work to ground organizational values and recruitment practices so that they are inclusive. They will redefine their roles by accepting accountability for setting the tone with deliberate and strategic action to diversify their boards.

Applying a Racial Equity Lens to Board Service

Nonprofits strive to confront multiple problems in our society. These include poverty, homelessness, obesity, domestic abuse, education gaps, hunger insecurity and many others. Inherit in these issues is systemic and structural racism.

This webinar will help executives and boards prioritize and commit to the ongoing journey towards diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and access inside board culture.

Engaging Your Board in Equity-Centered Fundraising

In this webinar, attendees will discover how to get boards fired up about raising funds for their organizations. We will also discuss how fundraising is evolving to center diverse communities, development officers, and high-net-worth donors.

  2. Review the motivations diverse donors have for giving.
  3. Embrace stewardship and the value of trust-focused relationships with donors.

Christal M. Cherry is a nationally recognized nonprofit executive and professionally trained fundraiser. With over 20 years in the nonprofit sector, she has supported higher education institutions, human services organizations and faith based missions. Her career portfolio, as a full time professional and consultant includes American University, the United Negro College Fund, Spelman College, Nicholas House, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Florida A & M University, Action Ministries and the GA Center for Nonprofits. In each role, Christal has interfaced, guided and collaborated with diverse boards made up of college presidents, ministers and bishops, politicians, corporate CEO's, civic leaders, consultants, attorneys, stay at home moms and students. With passion and a wide breadth of experience, Christal works today with clients to help them mark a clear path to success in board development. Her style is electrifying, inspiring, and energizing. Christal earned a MA in Counseling from Hampton University, a BA in Liberal Arts from Hofstra University and professional development certifications in nonprofit leadership, social media fundraising, and nonprofit management. She currently serves on the board of the Greater Atlanta chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Villages of Carver YMCA. She is regular presenter with CANDID, Qgiv, Network for Good, Bloomerang, and the Mississippi Alliance of Nonprofits and Philanthropy where she facilitates webinars and teaches courses in fundraising, board development and equity and inclusion. Christal has been a guest on multiple podcasts and enjoy serving as a requested expert on board matters. She is contributing author in Collecting Courage, a documenting of racism and survival by 14 accomplished Black fundraisers working across North America. She also enjoys her membership in the African American Development Officers Network, Toastmasters, and F3, Fabulous Female Fundraisers which she founded.
