VCU Medical Philanthropy Academy: A Grateful Patient Faculty Education Program

  • Tom Maness, Associate VP for Development, VCU Health Sciences/MCV Campus
  • Carrie Mills, Senior Major Gift Officer, VCU Health

After years of grateful patient fundraising, Virginia Commonwealth University Health desired to partner more meaningfully – and effectively – with key clinical faculty to build a culture of philanthropic referrals. In 2019, we launched the Medical Philanthropy Academy, a six-month program to train 30 clinical physicians to increase partnerships with development to ultimately increase referrals and thereby increase philanthropic support.

Trends in Philanthropic Giving. Predictions for Philanthropy: Decoding the motivations and strategies of high net worth philanthropists

  • Erin Hogan, Managing Director at Bank of America Private Bank
  • Leslie Doyle, Institutional Client Advisor, Bank of America Private Bank

With the number of Americans giving to charity on the decline, many nonprofits increasingly rely on a smaller and more affluent circle of supporters to meet their fundraising goals. The importance and influence of high net worth donors has never been more significant. The presentation will highlight key findings from the U.S. Trust® Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy and predictions for the future of HNW philanthropy. We’ll close with a discussion on Donor Advised Funds (DAF) and the impact they are having in philanthropy and the thoughts to consider for organizations contemplating creating their own private label DAF.
