While an undergraduate, I completed several internships at non-profit organizations. Though none of those internships were in the Development department, I crossed paths with several individuals in philanthropy, and the career path piqued my interest during informational interviews. After completing undergrad, I secured an entry-level Development role, in the hopes of making some small positive impact on the world. After several years working in philanthropy in the education space, I was ready for a shift. The right opportunity arose in healthcare philanthropy, and I jumped.

Several of my loved ones have been personally affected by cancer. The opportunity to work for an oncology organization working to accelerate breakthroughs in lifesaving research felt very personal to me. It is invigorating to witness the treatment and research advances that are made in healthcare, fueled by philanthropy. I also enjoy being surrounded by colleagues who share this excitement and are equally passionate and mission driven.

After holding development roles at smaller organizations in the education space for several years (where I wore many hats…and learned a lot!), I made the decision to pivot to healthcare philanthropy, as well as to a larger organization where I could develop a more specialized skillset. This was a big change, with a very different work environment, but I have learned a lot in the subsequent years and I’m glad I made the leap.

My greatest passion (while unrelated to work) is travel. Being exposed to new cultures and gaining fresh perspectives never gets old. Leaving behind my typical routines and surroundings in exchange for exploring a new place is deeply rewarding.

Find the right mentors and advocates who will invest in your career growth. Additionally, careers are often not linear; have a career plan but be flexible as opportunities arise.

Fun Fact

A few years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to foster cats through a local rescue. However, we quickly became “foster fails” after falling for our first foster, an incredibly sweet, three-legged black kitten. We ended up adopting him, and now we can’t imagine our family without Pistachio.
